In almost a year of recording Beyond The Box Set, it occured to us this week that we've never actually covered a fully animated movie. So in the spirit of the new year, we decided to correct this oversight and turn our imaginations towards one of the most beloved animated features of the past decade, Pixar's WALL-E.
Written and directed by Andrew Stanton and Jim Reardon, WALL-E was one of Pixar Studios riskiest and most ambitious releases. Set in the wasted remnants of a long-abandoned Planet Earth, the movie follows a largely non-verbal trash compactor robot who dreams of experiencing true love - or at least the version of it depicted in his worn-out VHS of the 1969 musical Hello Dolly.
From its virtually dialogue-free first half to the depiction of a future in which humans have quite literally become oversized babies, WALL-E challenges its audience considerably more than the average children's movie. It was a gamble that paid off when the movie became a highly acclaimed global blockbuster, taking in over $200 million at the US Box Office and picking up the 2008 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Despite all this success, to date WALL-E has never been recomissioned for a sequel. Join us as we attempt to recitify this with a haunting end-of-humanity origin story and a romantic sequel that finds WALL-E and EVE's teenage child experiencing the first pangs of robot love during the Earth cleanup process.
Along the way we also discuss whether WALL-E should really be considered a children's movie, question the necessity of sentient parasols in the future and learn the hard way that 'cockroach life span' is a difficult phrase to say...

The second half of 2017 gave us blockbusters of wildly varying quality - from the artistic and commercial highs of Dunkirk and Baby Driver to the wildly misguided lows of Justice League and Geostorm. We also made time for some less mainstream fare, including Kumail Nanjiani's delightful The Big Sick, James Franco's hilarious The Disaster Artist and Darren Aronofsky's utterly batshit Mother!

From depressing Oscar contenders to terrible franchise movies, we watched a lot of movies in 2017 that wouldn't necessarily fit the Beyond The Box Set format. So we thought it'd be fun to round off the year with a quick-fire run through everything we saw in the cinema this year, complete with improvised sequel pitches.

Podcast crossover! In the fourth and final instalment of our 2017 festive mini-season, Paul and Paul from One Good Thing join us to discuss Arnold Schwarzenegger's utterly shameless Christmas cash-in 'Jingle All The Way'.
Released in 1996, Jingle All The Way tells the heartwarming tale of a workaholic father attempting to compensate for a year's worth of neglect by buying his son a highly coveted 'Turbo Man' action figure for Christmas.
Critics described the movie as 'crass' 'cynical' and 'painfully unfunny' - and those were some of the kinder reviews - but it made money at the box office and endures as a questionable Christmas classic to this day.
Tune in as we discuss Schwarzenegger's nonexistant comic timing, Jake Lloyd's inexplicable journey from this to 'Star Wars', why Sinbad's character is clearly in the midst of a serious psychotic episode and the mysterious phenomenon that is Phil Hartman - suburban sex God.
We also engage in our first ever 'pod-off' - pitching our joint 'Jingle All The Way' sequel concept against the boys from One Good Thing. Can either team improve on the original movie - or even the real straight-to-DVD sequel starring Larry The Cable Guy that we chose to pretend doesn't exist? It's a lower bar than usual...

From Hugh Grant's Prime Minister getting the hots for his chubby(?) secretary to Colin Firth's recently dumped writer forming a hasty bond with a woman he's never had a coherent conversation with, Richard Curtis' smash hit ensemble comedy posits that love can blossom in all sorts of unusual places. Well, for straight white men, anyway...
Join us as we debate whether there's any hope for Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman's failing marriage, discuss why Andrew Lincoln will probably end up murdering Kiera Knightley and wearing her skin as a sarong, and argue that Martin Freeman and Joanna Page's dry-humping body doubles may actually have the healthiest relationship in the whole movie...
We also pitch some drinking games for the movie - because by God, you'll need them - and come up with our own fantasy sequels, one of which is considerably more optimistic than the other...

A horror-comedy about a Bavarian Christmas demon who feasts on the flesh of naughty children? Starring Adam Scott, Toni Collette and a gun-toting Conchata Ferrell? On paper Krampus sounds like our kind of holiday movie... but a messy script and a lot of uncomfortable tonal shifts left us feeling a little disappointed.
That said, there was enough visual invention and dark humour in Michael Dougherty's 2015 take on this twisted European folk tale to give us plenty to talk about in this episode. Join us as we discuss ambiguously Austrian grannies, psychotic gingerbread men and the right way to incorporate baby-eating into a family comedy...
As always, we also brainstorm a few drinking games - including neglectful parenting, inappropriate reactions and instances of 'Adam Scott face' - before coming up with some fantasy sequel ideas. Would a twisted take on Tim Allen's The Santa Clause or an action-packed Stranger Things crossover help this franchise to achieve a more comfortable balance of horror and comedy? Released in 1946, It's a Wonderful Life stars Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, Donna Reed as Mary, Lionel Barrymore as the evil Mr Potter and Gloria Grahame as Violet. Like all classic movies, it was only modestly received on release, but soon built up a reputation of one of the most beloved films of the era. Both Stewart and Reed would cite it as the high point of their Hollywood careers.

As an object lesson in terror, it's hard to beat Stanley Kubrick's 1980 hotel horror 'The Shining'. Starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall as a seriously dysfunctional married couple who choose the wrong hotel for a winter of intense one-on-one time, the movie was a tortured production that scored derisive reviews at the time, but has now been reappraised as a pinnacle of its genre.
In this week's episode, John and Harry discuss red flag job interviews, debate the reasonable level of hysteria when confronted by an axe-wielding maniac, unpick the most inept rescue attempt ever committed to film and much more...

It's a family affair on Beyond The Box Set this week, as Harry's brother Sam Chappell pops by to pitch sequels for one of the funniest, saddest and most depraved British movies ever made - Withnail and I, starring Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann.
Released in 1987, Bruce Robinson's semi-autobiographical black comedy was a low-budget independent movie that became one of the most widely quoted cult classics of the era.
Join us as we discuss Camberwell Carrots, questionable cooking, John's extremely in-depth theory about Marwood's latent homosexuality and the classic line from this movie that has haunted us for years...
Discussing drinking games for this film seem almost moot given it practically invented the concept, but in lieu of downing lighter fluid, we came up with some slightly less lethal alternatives.
We also discussed some sequel ideas including an alcohol-fuelled origin story, a bittersweet reunion in the late 90s, and a possibly un-filmable psychological study into the intense co-dependence of the two lead characters.
