Thursday Dec 28, 2017
Thursday Dec 28, 2017
From depressing Oscar contenders to terrible franchise movies, we watched a lot of movies in 2017 that wouldn't necessarily fit the Beyond The Box Set format. So we thought it'd be fun to round off the year with a quick-fire run through everything we saw in the cinema this year, complete with improvised sequel pitches.
Join us in the first part of this mammoth undertaking, in which we vainly attempt to remember the plots of some of the movies we saw from January to June 2017. WARNING - spoilers abound for all of the movies we discuss in this episode, but we'll give you plenty of warning to hit the skip button if there's anything you havent gotten around to yet...

-------
Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we watch a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. Over the course of 2017 we've pitched sequels for stone-cold classics like Gladiator, Titanic and The Truman Show, cult favourites such as The Room, District 9 and Heathers... plus more questionable releases including 50 First Dates, Knights of Badassdom and the Super Mario Bros movie.
If you like the show, please hit subscribe on your preferred podcasting platform to hear a new episode every Friday. Beyond The Box Set is available for free download and streaming on iTunes, Stitcher, aCast, Podbean, Pocket Casts, Youtube, Google Play and many other popular podcasting platforms.
Leaving us a review is the absolute best way to help our show to find new listeners, so if your new year's resolution is to be nicer to strangers on the internet, please consider throwing some nice words and a star or five in our general direction on any platform that allows for it.
If you have a suggestion for a film you'd like to hear us cover - or a sequel idea of your own that you'd like us to shout out on air, you can contact us via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+ and Tumblr - or by leaving a comment under any blog post on our official website.

Love Actually 2: Love, Definitely?
Thursday Dec 14, 2017
Thursday Dec 14, 2017
Is Love Actually a heartwarming festive classic, or the sexist, fat-shaming cinematic equivalent of finding a lump of coal in your stocking? This week on Beyond The Box Set, we revisited Harry's all-time favourite Christmas movie, and found that our reactions to it diverted rather sharply, actually...
From Hugh Grant's Prime Minister getting the hots for his chubby(?) secretary to Colin Firth's recently dumped writer forming a hasty bond with a woman he's never had a coherent conversation with, Richard Curtis' smash hit ensemble comedy posits that love can blossom in all sorts of unusual places. Well, for straight white men, anyway...
Join us as we debate whether there's any hope for Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman's failing marriage, discuss why Andrew Lincoln will probably end up murdering Kiera Knightley and wearing her skin as a sarong, and argue that Martin Freeman and Joanna Page's dry-humping body doubles may actually have the healthiest relationship in the whole movie...
We also pitch some drinking games for the movie - because by God, you'll need them - and come up with our own fantasy sequels, one of which is considerably more optimistic than the other...
-------
Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we choose a notable standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. From timeless classics like The Shining and It's A Wonderful Life to more questionable fare like Super Mario Bros and Dom Hemingway, no sequel-free movie is safe from our wildly unfilmable imaginations.
If you enjoy the show, please hit subscribe on your preferred podcasting platform to hear a new episode every Friday. Beyond The Box Set is available for free download and streaming on iTunes, Stitcher, aCast, Podbean, Pocket Casts, Youtube, Google Play and many other popular podcasting platforms.

Krampus 2: The Satan Clause
Friday Dec 08, 2017
Friday Dec 08, 2017
A horror-comedy about a Bavarian Christmas demon who feasts on the flesh of naughty children? Starring Adam Scott, Toni Collette and a gun-toting Conchata Ferrell? On paper Krampus sounds like our kind of holiday movie... but a messy script and a lot of uncomfortable tonal shifts left us feeling a little disappointed.
That said, there was enough visual invention and dark humour in Michael Dougherty's 2015 take on this twisted European folk tale to give us plenty to talk about in this episode. Join us as we discuss ambiguously Austrian grannies, psychotic gingerbread men and the right way to incorporate baby-eating into a family comedy...
As always, we also brainstorm a few drinking games - including neglectful parenting, inappropriate reactions and instances of 'Adam Scott face' - before coming up with some fantasy sequel ideas. Would a twisted take on Tim Allen's The Santa Clause or an action-packed Stranger Things crossover help this franchise to achieve a more comfortable balance of horror and comedy? We actually think they might...

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we review a classic standalone movie, before competing to pitch fantasy sequel, prequel or remake ideas to bring them back to the big screen. From The Room as a period piece to the Sunshine/Toy Story crossover nobody was ever asking for, our ideas are unexpected, unconventional... and frequently totally unfilmable.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence 2
Thursday Sep 21, 2017
Thursday Sep 21, 2017
Haley Joel Osment achieved peak creepiness in this divisive sci-fi fairytale from the combined minds of Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick. But how does A.I. Artificial Intelligence hold up in 2017?
Join us as we brave traumatic face-melting, shameless emotional manipulation and many, many false endings to bring you some truly ludicrous sequel ideas, including an Orange Is The New Black-style TV show populated entirely by undesirable robots, and the A.I//TED crossover that nobody was waiting for...
Along the way we also invent some drinking games to help make that 146 minute runtime go by a little faster, discuss all the ways in which this movie got the future kind of right, but kind of wrong at the same time, and raise some very important questions about Jude Law's hairline...

It's Jude Law... but as you've never seen him before! This week on Beyond The Box Set, we're pitching sequels to Dom Hemingway, a 2013 East End Crime Drama that makes some *very* interesting choices...
Join us as we discuss uncomfortable blow job scenes, memory game dialogue and Richard E. Grant's timeless fashion choices. If you're feeling particularly brave, you can also play along with our Dom Hemingway drinking game. Fun for all the family!
In the grand Beyond The Box Set Tradition, we also pitch our own fantasy sequels to the movie, this week including a Wizard of Oz style road trip that reunites Dom with some memorable characters from the original film, plus a TV miniseries that places our hero deep undercover on the streets of Moscow...

Strictly Ballroom 2: Hell Toupee

Friday Aug 11, 2017
It was the cult Australian rom-com that launched a worldwide reality TV phenomenon. This week on Beyond The Box Set, we’re joined by Ellie Chalkley – host of the Keep Dancing podcast – to help us pitch sequels to Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom.
Join us as we discuss the fabulously tragic glamour of regional ballroom championships, the perils of 90s fake tan and whether Bill Hunter’s wig in this movie may actually have been possessed of a demon…
As always, we’re also on hand with a selection of weird and wonderful sequel ideas, including an All Star Ballroom Championship that rapidly descends into violent bloodshed, a reality TV reunion that finally gives Fran the happy ending she deserves and a… questionably related sequel that somehow incorporates The Lion King and the birth of The Simpsons.
Beyond The Box Set is a podcast in which we take classic standalone movies and compete to come up with the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. Does Edgar Wright have a woman problem? As his new movie Baby Driver lands in cinemas, John and Harry revisit Scott Pilgrim vs The World and are left with very mixed opinions about the Cornetto Trilogy director’s first American movie.
From Michael Cera’s leading man credentials to Brandon Routh’s highly questionable wig work, this movie left us with plenty to talk about – and that’s before we get to our fantasy sequel ideas, featuring a Western remake and a chilling drug-fuelled Trainspotting crossover.
Each week on Beyond The Box Set we take a classic standalone movie and compete to come up with the best, worst and weirdest sequel, prequel and spin-off concepts to bring them back to the big screen. This week on Beyond The Box Set, John and Harry wade through the plot holes to pitch sequels for one of the most insane thrillers of recent years. Join us for an unlikely riff on 1950s camp classic ‘The Bad Seed’, an Amazing Amy lifetime movie starring a steroid-pumped Elijah Wood, plus a horrifying act of fictional feline abuse that almost breaks up the podcast…

Patty cake sex games, horrifying toon-on-toon violence and a traumatic act of Shoe-icide – Who Framed Roger Rabbit might me the most unlikely smash hit of the 80s. 50 First Dates or 50 Waking Nightmares?
Thursday Mar 30, 2017
Thursday Mar 30, 2017
Is 50 First Dates a charming romantic comedy or the chilling tale of an abusive manchild manipulating a severely mentally ill woman into falling in love with him? We had mixed opinions on this 2004 Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore vehicle, but its bizarre tonal shifts did provide a surprisingly rich source of potential sequel ideas. Join us as we dig far deeper into the internal logic of this movie than anyone involved in its creation ever did…
