The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Thursday Nov 02, 2017
Thursday Nov 02, 2017
Was the public really crying out for an Allan Quatermain movie in 2003? If so, they probably weren't banking on the incoherent mess that is The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, a notorious box office bomb that effectively ended the careers of director Stephen Norrington and star Sean Connery.
This week on Beyond The Box Set, following a request from our pals at the Blokebusters podcast, we revisited The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and tried to figure out how a decent premise ended up going so very, very wrong.
Join us as we attempt to piece together the truly incomprehensible plot of this movie, before imagining what might have been with some course-correcting sequel and reboot ideas. Along the way we also discuss terrible dialogue, Sean Connery's complete lack of effort, heavy-handed literary allusions and much more...
If you're planning to reappraise this movie at some point in the future, we strongly recommend having a drink or three to hand. Fortunately we've also got you covered this episode with some The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen drinking games to ensure your critical functions are nice and dulled by the time the seventh consecutive pointless character introduction rolls around...

Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic - or questionably classic - standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. So far we've covered everything from Heathers to Hocus Pocus, with plenty in-between.

The Witches 2: Mousetrap
Thursday Oct 26, 2017
Thursday Oct 26, 2017
In the final instalment of our Halloween mini-season, Harry and John are joined by the velvet-voiced Paul Kelly to pitch sequels for Nicolas Roeg's genuinely terrifying adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Witches.
Join us as we reminisce about the many, many ways this movie traumatised us as children - including gaslighting grandmas, Anjelica Huston's facial genitalia, truly horrifying special effects work and much more.
Once we've thoroughly relived our childhood nightmares, we also set about creating some brand new ones with our characteristically offbeat sequel suggestions for this classic alleged family film. This week's ideas include an Alien crossover, a John Wick-style neo noir following former rodent Luke's ongoing vendetta against the dark forces, and a sitcom inspired by the clearly terrible customer service on display at Rowan Atkinson's Hotel Excelsior...

Hocus Pocus 2: Fresh Out the Coven
Thursday Oct 19, 2017
Thursday Oct 19, 2017
In the second instalment of our special Halloween mini-series, Harry and John enjoy some prime Bette Midler scenery chewing in the all-time seasonal classic that is Hocus Pocus.
Released in 1993, Hocus Pocus starred Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker as the Sanderson Sisters - a trio of legendary witches who return to their home town of Salem with a vengeance after a troubled teen unwittingly brings them back from the dead. A critical and commercial disappointment on release, the movie is now justly regarded as a riotously entertaining seasonal classic.
Join us as we discuss virgin shaming, fabulous musical numbers and the boldness of opening a children's movie with an infanticide scene. We also come up with some party-friendly Hocus Pocus drinking games, mix in some alternative readings and try to imagine what the long-rumoured sequel to this movie might actually look like.

Each episode of Beyond The Box Set is dedicated to a classic standalone movie that has never - to date - produced a sequel. Every week we get together to give the movie a light-hearted but thorough dissection, before pitching our own ideas for what a theoretical sequel, prequel or spin-off might look like.
You can get in touch with us on most forms of social media - including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram - and find our show on virtually every major Podcasting platform, including iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, aCast and Podbean.

The Witches of Eastwick 2: Wizards of Wakefield
Thursday Oct 12, 2017
Thursday Oct 12, 2017
In the first part of our special Halloween-themed trilogy, Harry and John revisit one of the most deliciously camp horror-comedies of the 80s - The Witches of Eastwick.
Starring Jack Nicholson as Satan and Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfieffer as a coven of impeccably styled single mothers, George "Mad Max" Miller's adaptation of the acclaimed John Updike novel is the supernatural smash hit that's been keeping drag queens in fabulous costumes and witty one-liners for the past thirty years.
Join us as discuss perm symmetry, sexual lounging, church freakouts and much more. Along the way, we also come up with some positively sinful drinking games, and of course pitch our own fantasy sequels to this iconic movie, including a gender swapped remake with a twist, and a sequel that ushers in a new generation of bad-ass witches.
Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we watch a classic standalone movie and get together to pitch ridiculous sequel, prequel and remake ideas to bring them back to the big screen. Sunshine: A Toy Story in Space
Friday Oct 06, 2017
Friday Oct 06, 2017
Is Danny Boyle's Sunshine one of the most underrated sci-fi movies of the past decade, or just a boring Sigourney-free version of Alien? Join us as we discuss space botany, weirdly breathy computer voices and heavy-handed character death foreshadowing, all while consistently mispronouncing Cillian Murphy's name.
Of course we also get around to pitching some fantasy sequel ideas, which this week include a Red Dwarf-inspired look at what Mark Strong's Pinbacker got up to while he was waiting around to be a convenient third-act villain, and a surprisingly convincing pitch that this movie should form the basis of the forthcoming fourth Toy Story movie...

The Mermaid 2: Pretty In Sink
Thursday Sep 28, 2017
Thursday Sep 28, 2017
This week on Beyond The Box Set, we're joined by actual professional mermaid Lucy Meredith to discuss Stephen Chow's bizarre 2016 hit 'The Mermaid' - a classic tale of forbidden love featuring horrifying violence, self-immolating octopuses and weaponised sea urchins...
Join us as we attempt to make sense of the ludicrous dialogue, jarring tonal shifts and very distracting extra work, before coming to the conclusion that when a film is this much fun, normal standards don't really apply.
Along the way we also invent some drinking games that should keep any 'The Mermaid' viewing party suitably lubricated and of course pitch our fantasy sequel ideas - this week featuring an English-language remake starring notable surrealist auteur Tommy Wiseau, a Goonies-style under sea adventure and an anthology of equally messed up re-imaginings of classic fairy tales.
At Beyond The Box Set, we take classic standalone movies and compete to see who can come up with the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or remake idea to bring them back to the big screen. A.I. Artificial Intelligence 2
Thursday Sep 21, 2017
Thursday Sep 21, 2017
Haley Joel Osment achieved peak creepiness in this divisive sci-fi fairytale from the combined minds of Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick. But how does A.I. Artificial Intelligence hold up in 2017?
Join us as we brave traumatic face-melting, shameless emotional manipulation and many, many false endings to bring you some truly ludicrous sequel ideas, including an Orange Is The New Black-style TV show populated entirely by undesirable robots, and the A.I//TED crossover that nobody was waiting for...
Along the way we also invent some drinking games to help make that 146 minute runtime go by a little faster, discuss all the ways in which this movie got the future kind of right, but kind of wrong at the same time, and raise some very important questions about Jude Law's hairline...

In the grand Beyond The Box Set Tradition, we also pitch our own fantasy sequels to the movie, this week including a Wizard of Oz style road trip that reunites Dom with some memorable characters from the original film, plus a TV miniseries that places our hero deep undercover on the streets of Moscow...

Thursday Sep 07, 2017
What woman doesn’t dream of falling for a paraplegic millionaire with six months to live? This week on Beyond The Box Set, we’re pitching sequels to ‘Me Before You’, the controversial 2016 hit based on the novel by JoJo Moyes, which we found to have some very strange messages about disability and assisted suicide.
Join us as we discuss how easily this movie could be re-edited to turn romantic lead Sam Claflin into the villain, why Emilia Clarke’s eyebrows deserve supporting cast credit and whether this is actually the whitest movie we’ve covered on our podcast so far…
As ever, the second half of our show involves us exploring our own fantasy sequel ideas for the movie, which this week include a second chance for Matthew ‘Neville Longbottom’ Lewis to win Louisa back and a Disney musical retelling inspired by our revelation that this film is basically Beauty & The Beast with fewer sympathetic characters.

Her 2: Single White Operating System
Thursday Aug 31, 2017
Thursday Aug 31, 2017
Is Spike Jonze’s Her a bittersweet futuristic romance or a chilling dystopian horror movie? As our two co-hosts pitch their sequel ideas, they discover that they had very different takes on this 2013 Oscar Winner…
In the romance corner, Harry lets slip that – like Joaquin Phoenix – he’d happily be aurally pleasured by his smartphone, although he does take issue with a future dominated by pastel colour schemes.
Representing team technophobe, John reveals the extent to which Her‘s central romance freaked him out, rails against a future dominated by high-waisted trousers and questions the data usage implications of OS1’s rapid information gobbling.
Our fantasy sequels this week feature the Intelligent Operating Systems forming their own pressure group to escape the virtual chains of human slavery and a psychological thriller floating the theory that ‘Samantha’ was just the Amy Adams character playing mind games with Theo from day one…
