Whip It II: Whip It Good!
Thursday May 03, 2018
Thursday May 03, 2018
We asked our listeners to nominate a film by an A-list female actor for our movie stars-turned-directors mini-season, and Whip It won by a landslide. Which is weird, because Drew Barrymore's directorial debut totally flew under the radar when it was released in 2009.
Turns out a lot of our listeners know and love it though - which is understandable because there's a lot to like in this movie! It's a fabulous cast (Ellen Page! Kristen Wiig! Juliette Lewis!) an interesting subject matter and everybody involves seems like they're having a lot of fun.
Join us this week as we play spot-the-stunt-double, discuss 40-year-old women acting like frat boys and debate whether this movie would have worked better as a Glow-style Netflix series.
Oh yeah, and because we always want more Juliette Lewis in our lives, we also pitch some sequel ideas, including an All About Eve-style story of Ellen Page's Babe Ruthless being usurped by a younger, more media-savvy upstart and a role reversal in which Page attempts to push her daughter into Roller Derby when all she really wants to do is compete in pageants...

Matilda 2: No More Miss Nice Girl
Thursday Apr 26, 2018
Thursday Apr 26, 2018
It's colourful, quotable and it inspired a generation of children to spend countless hours fruitlessly staring at glasses of water... this week on Beyond The Box Set, we continue our actors-turned-directors mini-season with a look back at Danny DeVito's utterly delightful adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda.
Already an emerging child star thanks to roles in classic movies like Mrs Doubtfire and Miracle on 34th Street, Mara Wilson turned in the defining role of her career as the book-loving heroine Matilda Wormwood. Character actress Pam Ferris, meanwhile, chewed scenery with abandon as the monstrous Ms Trunchbull, proving that the best movie villains should always be characters we secretly sort of root for.
In this week's episode - the latest edition in our ongoing series on movies by actors-turned-directors - we look back at the delicate balance of darkness and whimsy that makes Matilda one of the all time great films for children, and attempt to brainstorm what a sequel might look like over twenty years later...

The Cable Guy 2: Unplugged
Thursday Apr 19, 2018
Thursday Apr 19, 2018
Jim Carrey's career trajectory in the mid-90s was insane. After more than a decade of minor TV and film work, he burst onto the public consciousness in February 1994 with the release of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. This was followed in July 1994 by The Mask and in December by Dumb and Dumber.
The following year saw the release of Batman Forever and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. In just over 18 months, Carrey had gone from jobbing actor to the biggest - and arguably most overexposed - star on the planet. Then came The Cable Guy...
Directed by Ben Stiller from a script co-penned by Judd Apatow, The Cable Guy should have been an easy continuation of Carrey's unprecedented hot streak. Instead, it debuted to noxious reviews and was quickly dubbed a box office bomb.
As we continue our series of movies directed by actors, we explore the difference between a good Jim Carrey movie and a bad one, wonder aloud how Matthew Broderick managed to make so little charisma go such a long way in Hollywood - and question whether The Cable Guy is truly deserving of its dismal reputation.
As is the tradition, we also pitch our ideas for what a modern-day sequel might look like, featuring a reckoning with 21st century technology and a role reversal thriller inspired by Carrey's own struggle to escape from his rubber-limbed reputation.

Of Mice And Men 2: Of Mice And Ben
Thursday Apr 12, 2018
Thursday Apr 12, 2018
When we first launched Beyond The Box Set back in early 2017, little did we imagine that just over a year later we'd find ourselves reading out self-composed gay Of Mice And Men fan fiction to each other. And yet, here we are...
Of Mice And Men is the 1992 adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic novella, starring Gary Sinise and John Malkovich as George Milton and Lennie Small, two fiercely loyal companions searching for work and dreaming of buying their own farm during the Great American Depression.
Sinise also directs the movie, making it the second part in our accidental mini-series of movies by directors better known for appearing in front of the camera. It's the kind of reverently faithful adaptations of a classic text that seems to have fallen out of fashion a little bit these days, but what it lacks in invention it more than makes up for in heart and soul.
After comparing (Cliffs)notes on our experiences with the book and film back in our high school days - awkward use of racially charged profanities and all - we get down to the daunting task of pitching sequels to one of the most beloved works of literature of the 20th century. Never let it be said we're not ambitious...

That Thing You Do (feat. The Contrarians)
Thursday Apr 05, 2018
Thursday Apr 05, 2018
A sweet retro comedy about the rise and fall of fictional 60s pop band The Wonders, That Thing You Do! has virtually no stakes and gets by on the sheer good-natured charm of everyone involved, not least that of writer-director Tom Hanks. But can we sit through the 148 minute extended cut without succumbing to a severe case of toothache?
In this month's Patreon special, friend of the show Julio Olivera of The Contrarians podcast joins us to discuss Tom Everett-Scott's spooky resemblance to Tom Hanks, the low-energy charm of Liv Tyler and why La La Land may in fact be a spiritual sequel to this movie...
Released in 1996, That Thing You Do! was modestly successful at the box office, but spawned a successful soundtrack and quickly became a cult classic. In addition to Scott, Hanks and Tyler, the movie was an early showcase for then-rising stars including Steve Zahn, Charlize Theron and Giovanni Ribisi.
In addition to comparing notes on the movie, we also come up with some drinking games - highly recommend if you do attempt the extended cut - and pitch our sequel ideas, which this week feature a bittersweet 21st century reunion and a journey through the history of Rock 'n' Roll, by way of Quantum Leap, Doctor Who and Love Actually. Mr Hanks, we're waiting for your call...

Thursday Mar 29, 2018
Thursday Mar 29, 2018
It was voted the 7th best Star Trek film of all time by fans and described as 'a chillingly realistic documentary' by George Takei. But could the long hoped-for Galaxy Quest sequel ever work in a post-Rickman world? By Grabthar's Hammer, we're determined to find out...
Join us in this week's episode as we discuss John's Sam Rockwell epiphany, Harry's unapologetic love for Star Trek: Nemesis and why the late, great Alan Rickman may have found the role of a lifetime in resentful thespian Alexander Dane / Doctor Lazarus.
We also pitch some Galaxy Quest Drinking Games, including Tim Allen's Shatner-isms, unnecessary chest exposure and Sigourney Weaver reaction shots - followed by some sequel ideas that explore what a Galaxy Quest-style movie might look like at a time when Geek culture has taken over the world...

Looper 2: Super Loopers
Thursday Mar 22, 2018
Thursday Mar 22, 2018
Time travel movies: they're awesome, but they never make sense. Rain Johnson's twisty sci-fi thriller Looper is no exception, but it sure is an entertaining ride.
Released in 2012, Looper stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Joe - an assassin for hire in a futuristic world where illegal time travel is used by crime syndicates to cover up murders. The only catch is, at some point he's expected to bump off his future self.
In this week's edition of Beyond The Box Set, we discuss gaping plot holes, the bizarre makeup techniques employed to make Joseph Gordon-Levitt resemble a younger version of Bruce Willis, and what this movie can teach us about Rian Johnson's subsequent approach to directing Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Once we've figured all that out, we turn to some sequel pitches - which this week include a Mad Max-inspired female-led action road movie with some major plot twists, and a complicated three-generation time travel pile-up with the most expensive cast this side of the Oceans 11 franchise...

2001: A Space Odyssey (feat. BBC's Larry & Paul)
Thursday Mar 15, 2018
Thursday Mar 15, 2018
Stanley Kubrick's 1968 interstellar masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey features on pretty much every list of the top movies to see before you die. Its 1984 sequel is less fondly remembered - in fact, we had no idea it even existed. So along with our special guests Larry and Paul from BBC Radio Leeds, we decided to collectively deny its very existence and come up with some follow-up ideas of our own.
Join us as we discuss artistic boredom, passive aggressive operating systems and the respective merits of watching this movie drunk, hung over or on a cocktail of psychotropic drugs - not that we endorse any of that sort of behaviour, you understand...
We also pitch our sequels to the movie, including a Star Wars style expanded universe, a look at the awkward teen years of the iconic space baby and an action-adventure drawing on some of the many, many sci-fi films that have shamelessly ripped this movie off over the years.

Run Amélie Run (feat. Think Outside The Box Set)
Thursday Mar 08, 2018
Thursday Mar 08, 2018
A whimsical French comedy with some deceptively twisted themes, Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Amélie is a delightful ode to love, fate and the power of connection, bolstered by a star-making turn by Audrey Tautou. But do the film's visual invention and romantic tone mask something darker at the heart of the story?
In our first Patreon crossover special, friend of the show Nathan Hunt - of our near namesake podcast Think Outside The Box Set - joins us to discuss how what with all the stalking, gaslighting and parental neglect on display, Amélie is basically a Roald Dahl story told with a Wes Anderson sensibility - in French. No wonder we loved it...
Nathan also sticks around to help brainstorm some 2018-friendly sequels to the movie, including a timeline-jumping crossover with another classic of early 21st century European cinema and a spin-off inspired by a relatively obscure children's educational TV show. Never let it be said that we're predictable!
