The Big Lebowski 2: Finding Donny (feat. Genuine Chit Chat)
Thursday Sep 13, 2018
Thursday Sep 13, 2018
With an endlessly quoteable script from The Coen Brothers and career-defining performances from Jeff Bridges and John Goodman, The Big Lebowski is probably the ultimate slacker comedy. Mike Burton from Genuine Chit Chat joins us this week to discuss his abiding love of the movie - and to help us to pitch a few sequels.
Tune in as we discuss White Russians, incomprehensible kidnapping plots, John's strong erotic reaction to Jeff Bridges acid dancing and how this movie unexpectedly brought out Harry's reactionary side.
As always, after we're done waxing nostalgic about the movie, we move on to pitching our own fantasy sequel ideas - all of which mysterious hinge on the tragic fate of Donny, the unsung hero of The Dude's bowling team. Can our storytelling skills finally grant him the justice he deserves? There's only one way to find out...

Burlesque 2: Season of the Bitch
Thursday Sep 06, 2018
Thursday Sep 06, 2018
It's a passion! It's a fashion! It's... a campy wig explosion with terrible acting, a nonsensical plot and far, far too many characters! In this very special edition of Beyond The Box Set, we're joined by returning guests Oli Ajulo and Louise Ball to discuss Burlesque - the 2010 movie musical starring Cher, Christina Aguilera and precisely zero nipple tassles.
Written and directed by Steven Antin - who we suspect might possibly be a well-connected gay man with no self control - Burlesque may have been a donkey at the box office, but chances are it'll be screening at drag bars and bad movie events until the end of time.
Tune into this week's episode to hear our doomed attempts at making sense of the plot, our theory that Christina Aguilera's character is quite obviously the villain of the movie and some extremely variable Cher impersonations...
In a twist on our usual format, we also formed competing teams with our two guests to present a pair of sequel ideas that include a musical riff on the Scream franchise and a prequel that attempts to clear the name of one of the original movie's most unfairly maligned characters...

Our show is available on all good podcasting platforms including iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher and aCast. Death Becomes Her 2: Ghost Protocol
Thursday Aug 30, 2018
Thursday Aug 30, 2018
We were in dire need of a comedy palate cleanser after sitting through the dreadful 'Sausage Party' for last week's episode, so John decided that the time was right to bring out an all-time favourite. Death Becomes Her is probably the only movie that gives you two Oscar-winning actresses rising from the grave and beating each other over the head with shovels.
Directed by the always visually inventive Robert Zemeckis, what Death Becomes Her lacks in subtlety, it more than makes up for in crazed, campy and endlessly quotable entertainment. Join us as we discuss warring divas, Isabella Rosellini going full panto and why we love Bruce Willis playing cartoonishly against type.
We also put our heads together to pitch some belated sequel ideas, which this week include a global immortality epidemic, the return of the shadowy Big Daddy corporation and a conspiracy theory involving another iconic - and strangely ageless - Hollywood A-Lister.

Sausage Party 2: Starbaked
Thursday Aug 23, 2018
Thursday Aug 23, 2018
Food and sex can be a wonderful combination... at times. Sausage Party is not one of those times.
Written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Sausage Party imagines a world in which processed food is sentient and worships human beings as Gods... little imagining the horrors that await them when they're finally purchased. Not the worst concept in the world, but sadly not one that has the smarts or the laughs to sustain a feature film.
This week on Beyond The Box Set, Harry and John find themselves challenged with pitching sequel ideas for a movie they were pretty much sick of after the first ten minutes of food puns and nonsensical sex jokes. It's a tall order, so tune in to find out how they did. Please. Seriously, if you don't, we sat through this garbage for nothing...

A Knight's Tale 2: The Gorgeous Ladies of Jousting
Friday Aug 17, 2018
Friday Aug 17, 2018
Fonging hell! We've got a real crowd pleaser to talk about this week - gleefully anachronistic jousting adventure A Knight's Tale, the starring the much-missed Heath Ledger.
Released in 2001, A Knight's Tale helped to establish Ledger as a reliable leading man, after well-received supporting turns in 10 Things I Hate About You and The Patriot. It also featured a memorable cast of supporting characters including Alan Tudyk, Mark Addy and future Marvel star Paul Bettany in the role of a loudmouthed, frequently naked Geoffrey Chaucer.
This week's movie was selected by special guest Jason Croxon, host of the A Conversation With... podcast. Jason joins us on this episode to discuss olde worlde relationship politics, variable accent work, scenery chewing extras and much more.
As always, we also spend the second half of the episode pitching our own fantasy sequel ideas to this feelgood romp - which sadly have to work around the less than cheerful fact of Ledger's tragic death in 2008. How could a spin-off movie ever work in his absence? That's a question we challenge ourselves to answer this week. Tune in now to see how we fared...

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we revisit a classic standalone movie that, for whatever reason, never got an official sequel. May 2: The Tribute
Thursday Aug 09, 2018
Thursday Aug 09, 2018
May we have your attention please? This week we're taking on a slightly less well-known movie than usual, but we definitely think it's worthy of a wider audience. Writer-director Lucky McKee's May is a surprisingly thoughtful and challenging indie-horror about a lonely and isolated young woman who takes a... creative approach to dealing with rejection.
Joined by this week's special guest, May super-fan Kit Sheppard, we discuss the traumatic influence of creepy childhood dolls, Anna Faris' questionable acting choices and the sad fate of poor, sweet Blank with the cartoonishly large hair...
We also brainstorm some sequel ideas including an all-star, mega-budget horror upgrade inspired by Aliens, an Orange Is The New Black-inspired crossover and a decidedly adult spin on Pixar's Toy Story formula.

Blue Velvet - An Antz Perspective
Thursday Aug 02, 2018
Thursday Aug 02, 2018
Blue Velvet - an iconic movie of the 80s, but perhaps not the most compatible movie for the consumption of omelettes. That's just one of the many lessons we learned while attempting to make sense of David Lynch's twisted suburban noir.
Join us in this week's episode as we discuss the sinister appeal of Kyle Maclachlan, Isabella Rosellini's rather limited nightclub repertoir, and why, in a movie filled with terror and violence, a Roy Orbison lip sync number might just be the scariest scene of all...
David Lynch doesn't really do traditional sequels, but we like to think he'd approve of some of our sequel ideas this week, including an unlikely children's movie set inside a certain severed appendage, a sitcom retelling - complete with laugh track - and a Dennis Hopper origin story with some controversial re-casting choices...

Drag Me To Hell II: Justin's Long Con
Thursday Jul 26, 2018
Thursday Jul 26, 2018
Talking goats, doomed kittens and a *lot* of projectile vomiting, Drag Me To Hell found Sam Raimi back in his comedy-horror element after his lucrative turn behind the Spider Man franchise. But does it have the potential to become an Evil Dead-esque franchise?
For this week's episode of Beyond The Box Set, we discuss the extreme pettiness of Gypsy curses, Octavia Spencer's blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo and the wonderfully ludicrous concept of Professor Justin Long, before pitching our own ideas for extending the franchise - including a sequel set entirely in hell itself, and the unlikely but strangely compelling confluence of Star Wars, Jade Pinkett-Smith and Sam Raimi.

Jerry Maguire 2: Jerry's Game
Thursday Jul 19, 2018
Thursday Jul 19, 2018
From the chunky flip phones and questionable hair to the dodgy sexual politics and curious lack of any real stakes, Jerry Maguire is perhaps the quintessential mid-90s prestige rom com. Written and directed by Cameron Crowe, the movie stars Tom Cruise as a successful sports agent whose search for meaning in a cynical industry leads him into the arms of warm-hearted, possibly overly suggestible single mother Renee Zellweger.
In this week's episode of Beyond The Box Set, we discuss the bizarre pacing of this movie, Renee Zellweger's succession of very poor decisions in the film and the fact that we're pretty sure all of the characters are addicted to cocaine.
Once we've completed a thorough post-mortem, we move on to pitching our own Jerry Maguire sequels as set in 2018. Would Jerry's questionable business strategy of focusing on fewer clients and less money be working out for him? Would his quickie marriage to a woman who may very well be in a cult still be going strong? And would Cuba Gooding Jr ever appear in another successful project again?
