Fargo 2: Murder in Minnesota
Friday Nov 15, 2019
Friday Nov 15, 2019
With winter rapidly drawing in, a chilly thriller set in the frozen climes of the American Midwest seemed like an appropriate choice for this week's episode. Released in 1996, Fargo is one of the Coen Brothers' most beloved movies, and one of the most acclaimed and influential pictures of its time.
On this week's episode, we discuss breaking our only rule - yes, we're aware of the TV show - iconic accent work, Gunderson relationship goals, the endless joy of watching Steve Buscemi take physical and verbal abuse, and much more...
We also brainstorm some Fargo drinking games and pitch some sequel ideas to find out what the survivors of the original film might be up to 25 years later. Is it worth a listen? Yer darn tootin'!

Bram Stoker's Dracula: Meet The Harkers
Friday Oct 11, 2019
Friday Oct 11, 2019
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring an A-list 90s cast engaging in some highly variable accent work, Bram Stoker's Dracula is one of the most loyal screen adaptations ever made of the classic horror novel. As our Vampire season continues, we debate how successful the page-to-screen transition really is and attempt to pitch some sacrilegious sequels...
Tune in to hear our thoughts on Keanu Reeves wooden acting, why Gary Oldman is the perfect choice to play the flamboyant prince of darkness, Anthony Hopkins hilariously poor bedside manner as the Vampire hunter Van Helsing, plus drinking games, listener pitches and more...

Friday Oct 04, 2019
Four vampires navigate the eternal struggle of flat-sharing in Taika Waititi's hilarious 2014 mockumentary 'What We Do In The Shadows'. As we kick off our season of Vampire movies, does this film still retain its comedic bite?
In this week's podcast, we discuss undead etiquette, Werewolves vs Swearwolves, the legend of Stu and more, plus What We Do In The Shadows drinking games, listener pitches and of course our own fantasy sequel ideas...

Election 2: Becoming Tracy Flick
Friday Sep 27, 2019
Friday Sep 27, 2019
A pointed political satire from Sideways director Alexander Payne, Election gave a young Reese Witherspoon the role of a lifetime as Tracy Flick, a hyper-ambitious young student who invokes the impotent rage of frustrated middle school teacher Matthew Broderick.
Two decades on, the narrative of a highly qualified female politician being judged more for her likability than her qualification feels more relevant than ever. With that in mind, having survived Broderick's attempted sabotage in the original movie, we were interested to discover where Tracy might go next...
Find out in this week's episode, in which we also discuss 90s movie driving, lies in voiceover, why wildcard candidate Tammy might have accidentally predicted Donald Trump and more...

Napoleon Dynamite's High School Reunion
Thursday Sep 12, 2019
Thursday Sep 12, 2019
A micro-budget indie comedy with no recognisable stars, Napoleon Dynamite was a surprise crossover smash in 2004. However, it was also highly divisive - and up until now, John has actively avoided watching it. Can Harry and this week's special guest convince him to overcome his prejudices, or will this movie land like a cold slab of steak to the face?
Tune into this week's episode to hear our thoughts on unlikable characters, questionable timelines, inexplicable Llamas and disgusting, disgusting food - plus our usual combination of drinking games, listener reviews and fantasy sequel pitches that attempt to imagine where Napoleon, Kip, Deb, Pedro and Uncle Rico might be today...

Girls Trip 2: Diva Las Vegas
Friday Jul 26, 2019
Friday Jul 26, 2019
An outrageous comedy hit that introduced the world to the irrepressible talents of Tiffany Haddish - and an eye-opening new use for the humble grapefruit - Girls Trip definitely left us hungry for more.
Tune into this week's podcast to hear our thoughts on explosive urination, dangerous levels of alcohol abuse, the most violent bar-fight we've seen since The Punisher and more.
As usual, we also pitch some drinking games of our own - though they seem almost moot in the context of this movie - and discuss where we'd like to see these characters go next when the inevitable sequel rolls around... Girls Trip in Vegas, anyone?

Each week, we take a look at a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch sequels, prequels and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. The Further Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
Friday Jul 12, 2019
Friday Jul 12, 2019
Sharpen your nails and dust off your wittiest one-liners! This week, we're heading off on the road trip of a lifetime with a look back at The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert!
An outrageously camp Australian comedy shot on a minimal budget, TAO Priscilla, Queen of The Desert was an unlikely box office hit back in 1994, even picking up an Academy Award for Costume Design. It also made stars of Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce, while Terrence Howard's turn as world-weary transgendered woman and reluctant drag queen Bernadette must go down as one of the most unlikely comeback performances in Hollywood history.
In this week's podcast, we discuss camp classics, lip sync extravaganzas and some... unfortunate racial stereotyping before pitching some sequel ideas that imagine how Bernadette, Felicia and Mitzi Del Bra might have fared in the modern LGBTQ+ culture. Hold onto your wigs!

Beyond The Box Set is a movie podcast with a difference. Each week, we discuss a classic standalone movie that for whatever reason never received a sequel. Left Behind 2: Highway To Hell (feat. Chris Scott)
Friday Jun 28, 2019
Friday Jun 28, 2019
For the second time this month, our disaster movie season lands on the bizarre latter-day career choices of Nicholas Cage. Based on a bestselling Christian book series, 2014's Left Behind is a low-budget, shoddily made train wreck that not even Jesus could save from box office oblivion.
With the help of our special guest Chris Scott from the Ask Karen podcast, we spend this week's episode discussing important spiritual matters such as Nicholas Cage's alarming headpiece, the suspiciously porn star-sounding character names, dwarf kicking, air hostess slut shaming and much more.
Along the way we also have the usual collection of drinking games - and trust us, you'll need it for this one - listener submissions and of course, sequel pitches! Given that this movie was intended to kickstart a nine-part franchise, theoretically we should have plenty to work with. You'll have to tune in to discover just how that turned out...

Knowing 2: All Knowing
Friday Jun 14, 2019
Friday Jun 14, 2019
Somehow, Beyond the Box Set has managed to exist for two whole years without us ever diving into the filmography of the iconic human meme machine that is Nicholas Cage. Fortunately our current disaster movie mini-season offers plentiful opportunities to correct this oversight, so this week - on Harry's suggestion - we're discussing the suspiciously religious-feeling 2009 apocalypse epic Knowing.
Despite garnering dreadful reviews (and deservedly so) this film topped out at over $200 million at the global box office. It stars Cage as a celebrated scientist turned day drinking - and inexplicably night barbecuing - widower who stumbles upon what he believes to be the formula for predicting the end of the world. Rose Byrne and Ben Mendhelson are also in it, but you could be forgiven for not noticing...
Tune into this week's podcast to hear our thoughts on whispering Cage vs screaming Cage, the questionable taste levels of appropriating 9/11 for a schlocky Sci-fi conspiracy theory and why shoplifting Blu-rays may be the ultimate in mid-00s petty crime...
Along the way we also come up with some Knowing drinking games - passing out on your keyboard, sofa or gravel path entirely optional - and attempt to follow the questionable logic of the original movie through with some sequel ideas.

Tropic Thunder 2: Welcome Back To The Jungle
Thursday May 30, 2019
Thursday May 30, 2019
Featuring ludicrously OTT gore, Ben Stiller going full r-word and Robert Downey Jr. improbably turning a black face performance into Oscar gold, Tropic Thunder is a Hollywood satire that made us laugh and squirm in equal measure.
Poking fun at the egos and eccentricities of A-list movie stars and powerful studio heads, Tropic Thunder follows a dysfunctional cadre of actors - including a faded action star, an Oscar darling who's a little too committed to the method and a drug-addled gross-out icon - as their attempts to complete production of a high budget war movie in the jungles of Vietnam go horribly off the rails.
The movie cleaned up at the box office and won almost unanimously positive reviews, but not without attracting a level of controversy that might make it a much tougher sell in 2019. In this week's episode, we discuss the thin line between outrageous and offensive, the glorious shade this movie throws towards Eddie Murphy and Russell Crowe, and that unforgettable Tom Cruise cameo...
After that, it's time to pitch our own fantasy sequel ideas, including a movie within a movie within a movie, Tropic Thunder in Space - which is pretty much just Galaxy Quest - and a much-needed effort to redress the notable gender imbalance in the original film.
