Thursday Dec 28, 2017
Thursday Dec 28, 2017
From depressing Oscar contenders to terrible franchise movies, we watched a lot of movies in 2017 that wouldn't necessarily fit the Beyond The Box Set format. So we thought it'd be fun to round off the year with a quick-fire run through everything we saw in the cinema this year, complete with improvised sequel pitches.
Join us in the first part of this mammoth undertaking, in which we vainly attempt to remember the plots of some of the movies we saw from January to June 2017. Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we watch a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. Over the course of 2017 we've pitched sequels for stone-cold classics like Gladiator, Titanic and The Truman Show, cult favourites such as The Room, District 9 and Heathers... plus more questionable releases including 50 First Dates, Knights of Badassdom and the Super Mario Bros movie.
If you like the show, please hit subscribe on your preferred podcasting platform to hear a new episode every Friday. Beyond The Box Set is available for free download and streaming on iTunes, Stitcher, aCast, Podbean, Pocket Casts, Youtube, Google Play and many other popular podcasting platforms.
Leaving us a review is the absolute best way to help our show to find new listeners, so if your new year's resolution is to be nicer to strangers on the internet, please consider throwing some nice words and a star or five in our general direction on any platform that allows for it.
If you have a suggestion for a film you'd like to hear us cover - or a sequel idea of your own that you'd like us to shout out on air, you can contact us via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+ and Tumblr - or by leaving a comment under any blog post on our official website.

Krampus 2: The Satan Clause
Friday Dec 08, 2017
Friday Dec 08, 2017
A horror-comedy about a Bavarian Christmas demon who feasts on the flesh of naughty children? Starring Adam Scott, Toni Collette and a gun-toting Conchata Ferrell? On paper Krampus sounds like our kind of holiday movie... but a messy script and a lot of uncomfortable tonal shifts left us feeling a little disappointed.
That said, there was enough visual invention and dark humour in Michael Dougherty's 2015 take on this twisted European folk tale to give us plenty to talk about in this episode. Join us as we discuss ambiguously Austrian grannies, psychotic gingerbread men and the right way to incorporate baby-eating into a family comedy...
As always, we also brainstorm a few drinking games - including neglectful parenting, inappropriate reactions and instances of 'Adam Scott face' - before coming up with some fantasy sequel ideas. Would a twisted take on Tim Allen's The Santa Clause or an action-packed Stranger Things crossover help this franchise to achieve a more comfortable balance of horror and comedy? We actually think they might...

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we review a classic standalone movie, before competing to pitch fantasy sequel, prequel or remake ideas to bring them back to the big screen. From The Room as a period piece to the Sunshine/Toy Story crossover nobody was ever asking for, our ideas are unexpected, unconventional... and frequently totally unfilmable.
If you enjoy the show, please hit subscribe on your preferred podcasting platform to hear a new episode every Friday. Beyond The Box Set is available for free download and streaming on iTunes, Stitcher, aCast, Podbean, Pocket Casts, Youtube, Google Play and more.
Leaving us a review is the absolute best way to help our show to find new listeners, so if you can spare some nice words and a star or five on iTunes or Stitcher, our gratitude would be eternal.

The Shining 2: Ghost Hotel
Thursday Nov 23, 2017
Thursday Nov 23, 2017
As an object lesson in terror, it's hard to beat Stanley Kubrick's 1980 hotel horror 'The Shining'. Starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall as a seriously dysfunctional married couple who choose the wrong hotel for a winter of intense one-on-one time, the movie was a tortured production that scored derisive reviews at the time, but has now been reappraised as a pinnacle of its genre.
In this week's episode, John and Harry discuss red flag job interviews, debate the reasonable level of hysteria when confronted by an axe-wielding maniac, unpick the most inept rescue attempt ever committed to film and much more...
This week's fantasy sequel ideas include a discussion on Stephen King's official followup - which is literally about a psychic cat - and our own, only slightly more out-there, reboot ideas including a Black Mirror-inspired reality remake and a comedy crossover with a controversial failed franchise movie...

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we revisit a famous standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas we can come up with to bring them back to the big screen. Sunshine: A Toy Story in Space
Friday Oct 06, 2017
Friday Oct 06, 2017
Is Danny Boyle's Sunshine one of the most underrated sci-fi movies of the past decade, or just a boring Sigourney-free version of Alien? Join us as we discuss space botany, weirdly breathy computer voices and heavy-handed character death foreshadowing, all while consistently mispronouncing Cillian Murphy's name.
Of course we also get around to pitching some fantasy sequel ideas, which this week include a Red Dwarf-inspired look at what Mark Strong's Pinbacker got up to while he was waiting around to be a convenient third-act villain, and a surprisingly convincing pitch that this movie should form the basis of the forthcoming fourth Toy Story movie...

Thursday Jul 27, 2017
Everybody should have one talent. Ours is coming up with questionable sequel ideas for classic movies. This week it’s the turn of Anthony Minghella’s fiendishly gripping 1999 psycho-sexual thriller The Talented Mr Ripley, featuring Matt Damon as a murderous bisexual con artist, Jude Law in speedos and Philip Seymour Hoffman being the most Phillip Seymour Hoffman he can be…
This week on Beyond The Box Set, we flash back to this star-studded 1999 thriller and pitch our spin-off ideas, including a Tom Ripley origin story and a sequel that catches up with him in the Disco Seventies. Along the way we also discuss Cate Blanchett’s role as the ultimate gap year girl from hell and reminisce about the days before Gwyneth Paltrow forgot how to act…

The Sixth Sense 2: Icy Dead People
Friday Jul 21, 2017
Friday Jul 21, 2017
We’re ready to tell you our secret now. We see… a scenery-chewing Wahlberg brother, questionable plot mechanics and a lot of unnecessary exposition.
This week on Beyond The Box Set, we’re pitching sequels to M. Night Shyamalan’s 1999 breakthrough hit ‘The Sixth Sense’, a movie we’re pretty sure Haley Joel Osment still gets quoted at him every day.
What if Cole cashed in on his ghost-whispering abilities and became a celebrated TV medium with some very famous contacts on the other side? Or what if our favourite pint-sized psychic travelled to Westeros to attempt to reason with the famously chatty White Walkers? The answers to these and many other questions can be found in this week’s podcast…

Thursday Jun 15, 2017
You are tearing us apart, listeners! This week on Beyond The Box Set, we’re pitching sequels to a feature that’s more meme than movie – Tommy Wiseau’s baffling, brilliant The Room. Joined by super fan Sebastian Clark, we discuss the movie’s clear Shakespearean parallels, Lisa’s limitless capacity for evil, Denny’s major boundary issues and the character whose tragic arc brings John to tears mid-podcast.
As is the tradition, we also pitch our own sequel ideas for the film, including a Gosford Park-style period remake, a reincarnated Johnny’s quest for revenge and a surprise Westworld crossover revealing that – spoiler alert! – the cast and crew were actually robots the whole time. Which, let’s face it, would certainly explain the acting…

This week on Beyond The Box Set, John and Harry wade through the plot holes to pitch sequels for one of the most insane thrillers of recent years. Join us for an unlikely riff on 1950s camp classic ‘The Bad Seed’, an Amazing Amy lifetime movie starring a steroid-pumped Elijah Wood, plus a horrifying act of fictional feline abuse that almost breaks up the podcast…
