Chronicle 2: Chronic Back Pain
Friday Jul 19, 2019
Friday Jul 19, 2019
An inventive blend of superhero action, high school drama and found footage horror, Chronicle is the kind of auspicious debut that should have set director Josh Trank on the road to a glittering career. Then Fantastic Four happened...
Disappointing follow-ups aside, Chronicle remains one of the most refreshing movies we've covered on this podcast in a while, and we'd definitely be open to some kind of sequel. In this week's episode, Lee Agne of the Connected Hearts podcast joins us to discuss hormonal superheroes, alien spunk, why every high school house party takes place in a mansion and more...

Deep Impact 2: Deeper Underground
Friday Jun 21, 2019
Friday Jun 21, 2019
A more thoughtful, character-driven take on the disaster movie genre that still finds room for exploding cars and city-crushing tidal waves, Deep Impact is easily the most respectable entry into our current mini-season... it even passes the Bechdel test with flying colours!
Tune into this week's episode to hear our thoughts on the awesomely Presidential Morgan Freeman, a badly miscast Tea Leoni and her inexplicably Austrian father, strangely neglectful parenting and Elijah Wood finding a novel way of forcing his high school crush to marry him.
As always, we've also got drinking games to play along with, and a pair of questionably creative sequel pitches to explore just what might have happened after the comet struck. Oceans rose, cities fell... but did hope really survive? Tune in to fund out...

Knowing 2: All Knowing
Friday Jun 14, 2019
Friday Jun 14, 2019
Somehow, Beyond the Box Set has managed to exist for two whole years without us ever diving into the filmography of the iconic human meme machine that is Nicholas Cage. Fortunately our current disaster movie mini-season offers plentiful opportunities to correct this oversight, so this week - on Harry's suggestion - we're discussing the suspiciously religious-feeling 2009 apocalypse epic Knowing.
Despite garnering dreadful reviews (and deservedly so) this film topped out at over $200 million at the global box office. It stars Cage as a celebrated scientist turned day drinking - and inexplicably night barbecuing - widower who stumbles upon what he believes to be the formula for predicting the end of the world. Rose Byrne and Ben Mendhelson are also in it, but you could be forgiven for not noticing...
Tune into this week's podcast to hear our thoughts on whispering Cage vs screaming Cage, the questionable taste levels of appropriating 9/11 for a schlocky Sci-fi conspiracy theory and why shoplifting Blu-rays may be the ultimate in mid-00s petty crime...
Along the way we also come up with some Knowing drinking games - passing out on your keyboard, sofa or gravel path entirely optional - and attempt to follow the questionable logic of the original movie through with some sequel ideas.

Geostorm 2: Dutch Oven
Friday Jun 07, 2019
Friday Jun 07, 2019
Gerard Butler and his distractingly thick neck race to save the world from ecological disaster in Geostorm, an instant ironic classic from the screenwriting team behind Independence Day. Featuring bad science, clunky dialogue and plot holes the size of the ozone layer, this 2017 bomb was a must for inclusion in our summer of Disaster Movies.
Join us as we discuss misplaced nationalism, inexplicable timelines, women in bikinis running from frozen tidal waves and the best-worst product placement we've ever seen in a semi-serious movie.
On its much-delayed release in 2017, Geostorm received scathing reviews and tanked hard at the box office, so sadly a sequel is unlikely to ever see the light of day. However, that doesn't deter us from pitching some ideas for the follow-up movie we'd like to see.

Mars Attacks 2: Cat Women From Venus!
Thursday Apr 25, 2019
Thursday Apr 25, 2019
After our Dangerous Liaisons disaster last week, we clearly needed a change of pace to keep this Glenn Close mini-series on the rails. Enter Mars Attacks! - Tim Burton's campy love letter to 50s B-movies, and a very different role for our current featured actress.
Mars Attacks! unites an impressive ensemble of 90s A-listers who prove more than willing to embrace the silliness - from Jack Nicholson as an opportunistic US President to Sarah Jessica Parker as a ditzy journalist who undergoes a startling canine transformation.
The real stars of the show are Burton's Martians, though. Delightfully vindictive and with no obvious motive beyond causing chaos and destruction, these little green monsters are movie villains for the ages - which makes it a shame that this movie turned out to be a one off. Could our sequel pitches inspire a long overdue revival? One thing's for sure, it couldn't be any worse than Burton's recent Dumbo remake...

John Carter Must Die (feat. Fake Nerd Podcast)
Friday Mar 29, 2019
Friday Mar 29, 2019
John Carter of Earth? John Carter of Mars? Frankly, as far as we're concerned this unholy mess of a movie should have been called John Carter and the completely incomprehensible plot.
Directed by Pixar legend Andrew Stanton and starring Battleship himbo Taylor Kitsch, the long gestating big screen adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' highly influential adventure novel was a disastrous box office bomb on release in 2012 - although it has since developed a small but vocal band of defenders.
One of those defenders is Brandon T McClure of the Fake Nerd Podcast, who gamely joins us this week to explain his love for this movie and attempt to unpick the seriously overstuffed plot for our benefit. He also sticks around for the usual drinking games and, of course, our attempts at pitching a workable sequel - although given the financials, we wouldn't hold our breath for any of them getting green lit by a studio. Not on this planet, anyway...

The Martian 2: Life On Mars?
Friday Mar 22, 2019
Friday Mar 22, 2019
Like most moviegoers, the last couple of years have kind of soured us on the screen talents of Matt Damon. Movies like Downsizing and Suburbicon haven't exactly made the best use of his talents, to put it mildly. So revisiting The Martian was a timely reminder that he can actually be pretty damn charming when he's actually given decent material to work with.
Directed by Ridley Scott, The Martian stars Damon as Mark Watney, a dry-witted space botanist accidentally stranded on Mars during a mission. While awaiting rescue he's forced to face off against exploding potatoes, a diminishing food supply and a lot of disco music. It's a lot of fun, which is a pleasant surprise for a modern Sci-fi movie.
Join us as we discuss key plot points such as Sean Bean's complete lack of accent effort, Jessica Chastain's questionable leadership skills and what the hell Kristen Wiig is doing in this movie. As usual, we also attempt to come up with some plausible sequel ideas to send this movie back into orbit.

The Shape of Water 2: The Sea-quel
Friday Mar 08, 2019
Friday Mar 08, 2019
This time last year, The Shape of Water was crowned Best Picture at the 90th Academy Awards. Twelve months on, has the movie lost any of its lustre?
As we bid adieu to another year of Oscar-watching, we decided to revisit Guillermo del Toro's fantastical passion project in our own unique way. Which of course means only one thing - sequels!
From an underwater origin story to an Arrival-inspired sci-fi romance, check out our ideas in this week's podcast - in which we also discuss the benefits of practical effects when depicting inter-species romance, enjoy the cartoonish villainy of Michael Shannon, mourn the tragic death of Pandora the cat and much more...

Battleship 2: Guess Who?
Friday Feb 08, 2019
Friday Feb 08, 2019
B12 - You sunk my battleship! To kick off our new 'movies based on games' mini-season, podcasting legend Phil Better joins us to discuss the frankly ludicrous 2012 Hasbro cash-in 'Battleship' - starring Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker and Rihanna in a concept so thin it barely covered a single movie, let alone a potential franchise...
Nevertheless, we're not ones to shy away from a challenge, so after we've finished dissecting the horrible dialogue, dreadful pacing and the unnerving sense that Battleship is less a movie than a 130 minute propaganda piece for the US Navy, we go all in on some sequel ideas - most of which involve extending the Hasbro cinematic universe to ever more ludicrous ends...

E.T. The Extra Terrestrial - LIVE! (feat. Kenrick & Miller)
Friday Jan 25, 2019
Friday Jan 25, 2019
We did it! To celebrate our 100th(!) episode of Beyond The Box Set, we decided to take a bold step into the Podcasting big leagues by hosting our very first live episode!
Obviously a major moment requires a major movie choice, so in front of a specially invited audience at our favourite pub, The Chemic Tavern in Leeds, we decided to pitch some sequel ideas for the Steven Spielberg classic E.T. The Extra Terrestrial.
Tune in to hear us thoroughly dissect some of the movie's most iconic scenes - with a little help from guest comics Kenrick & Miller - before attempting our most ambitious, creative and possibly nonsensical sequel pitch ever!
Huge thanks to everyone who turned up on the night, and everyone who listens to this episode! It's kind of a big deal for us and while it may be a little chaotic, it's truly a labour of love!
Here's to the next 100...
