The Perfection 2: Encore
Monday May 25, 2020
Monday May 25, 2020
Is Netflix the new spiritual home of trash-tactic B-movies? We could be OK with that if they reach the glorious heights of insanity achieved by The Perfection.
Written and directed by Richard Shepard (The Matador, Dom Hemingway), The Perfection stars Allison Williams and Logan Browning as a pair of classical music prodigies whose road trip across China goes horribly wrong in some very unexpected ways...
To say more would be spoiling it, so catch the movie now on Netflix and then download this episode to hear our thoughts on crazy twists, choice dialogue, the most upper-class heavies in movie history and much more - plus our usual blend of drinking games, listener reviews and fantasy sequel pitches!

Here at Beyond the Box Set, we're putting a creative twist on the movie podcast format. It may not be perfection, but it's a lot of fun - and we might even change the way you look at your favourite movie!

Ed Wood: The Softcore Years
Tuesday May 19, 2020
Tuesday May 19, 2020
An avowed lover of classic horror and campy 50s B-movies, it's difficult to imagine anybody but Tim Burton pulling off an Ed Wood biopic. Released at the height of his early 90s powers - directly between The Nightmare Before Christmas and Mars Attacks! - the film makes the inspired choice to celebrate Wood's spirit and sincere love of filmmaking, rather than sneer at his directorial shortcomings.
The film also features a career-best performance from Johnny Depp in the title role, with sterling support from Sarah Jessica Parker, Bill Murray and Martin Landau, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of faded horror icon Bela Lugosi.
In this week's podcast, we take a closer look at the real-life Ed Wood's career after he wrapped on the infamous Plan Nine from Outer Space. His filmmaking career continued, though it's probably safe to say there's a reason why his later films aren't quite as well-known...
We also discuss our thoughts on Burton's interpretation of the Ed Wood story, pitch some movie drinking games and check in with our regular listeners to see what creative elevator sequel pitches they managed to come up with. Are any of them worthy of the Ed Wood seal of approval? Tune in to find out...

Room To Breathe
Monday Apr 27, 2020
Monday Apr 27, 2020
With the world in turmoil and no end to the global lockdown in sight, we're all feeling a little fragile right now. In other words, it's the perfect time to indulge in some lighthearted, escapist comfort cinema to distract from the harsher realities of post-Coronavirus life. Unfortunately, Harry made a different choice this week, so we're watching Room.
Directed by Lenny Abrahamson and starring Brie Larson, Joan Allen and Jacob Tremblay, Room tells the harrowing story of a young woman struggling to protect her five-year old son from the harsh realities of life in captivity, after spending seven years locked in the tiny back yard shed of a sadistic kidnapper. Highly acclaimed on release, it earned Larson a well-deserved Academy Award for Best Actress. A feelgood romp though, it is not.
Tune into this week's episode to hear our thoughts on lockdown coping techniques, who cried the most during this movie, our toughest drinking game challenge yet and of course, sequel pitches.
We promise we'll have something a bit less emotionally draining on the table next week...
