Krampus 2: The Satan Clause
Friday Dec 08, 2017
Friday Dec 08, 2017
A horror-comedy about a Bavarian Christmas demon who feasts on the flesh of naughty children? Starring Adam Scott, Toni Collette and a gun-toting Conchata Ferrell? On paper Krampus sounds like our kind of holiday movie... but a messy script and a lot of uncomfortable tonal shifts left us feeling a little disappointed.
That said, there was enough visual invention and dark humour in Michael Dougherty's 2015 take on this twisted European folk tale to give us plenty to talk about in this episode. Join us as we discuss ambiguously Austrian grannies, psychotic gingerbread men and the right way to incorporate baby-eating into a family comedy...
As always, we also brainstorm a few drinking games - including neglectful parenting, inappropriate reactions and instances of 'Adam Scott face' - before coming up with some fantasy sequel ideas. Would a twisted take on Tim Allen's The Santa Clause or an action-packed Stranger Things crossover help this franchise to achieve a more comfortable balance of horror and comedy? We actually think they might...

It's A Wonderful Life 2: The Bailey Show
Thursday Nov 30, 2017
Thursday Nov 30, 2017
This week on Beyond The Box Set, John and Harry kick off their festive season by pitching modern-day sequels for the most heartwarming holiday classic ever made - Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life.
Join us as we discuss George Bailey's fragile mental health, the questionable business ethics of Baily Brothers Building & Loans and why there's something about Mary that we just don't trust...
We're also joined by our first ever returning guest Ross Burton, who helps us to pitch sequel ideas including a Christopher Nolan-style retelling of Harry Bailey's wartime adventures, a remake populated entirely by The Muppets and a bleak dystopian thriller that exposes the real reason George was never able to leave Bedford falls...
Released in 1946, It's a Wonderful Life stars Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, Donna Reed as Mary, Lionel Barrymore as the evil Mr Potter and Gloria Grahame as Violet. Like all classic movies, it was only modestly received on release, but soon built up a reputation of one of the most beloved films of the era. Both Stewart and Reed would cite it as the high point of their Hollywood careers.

The Shining 2: Ghost Hotel
Thursday Nov 23, 2017
Thursday Nov 23, 2017
As an object lesson in terror, it's hard to beat Stanley Kubrick's 1980 hotel horror 'The Shining'. Starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall as a seriously dysfunctional married couple who choose the wrong hotel for a winter of intense one-on-one time, the movie was a tortured production that scored derisive reviews at the time, but has now been reappraised as a pinnacle of its genre.
In this week's episode, John and Harry discuss red flag job interviews, debate the reasonable level of hysteria when confronted by an axe-wielding maniac, unpick the most inept rescue attempt ever committed to film and much more...
This week's fantasy sequel ideas include a discussion on Stephen King's official followup - which is literally about a psychic cat - and our own, only slightly more out-there, reboot ideas including a Black Mirror-inspired reality remake and a comedy crossover with a controversial failed franchise movie...

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we revisit a famous standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas we can come up with to bring them back to the big screen. Shaun of The Walking Dead
Friday Nov 17, 2017
Friday Nov 17, 2017
Rumours of an official 'Shaun of the Dead' sequel were sadly recently scotched by creators Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright, so we decided to come up with a few of our own!
This week, John and Harry are joined by horror movie super-fan Ady Wheatley to discuss vampire strippers, zombie sex dreams and all things Brit-Rom-Zom-Com!

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we watch a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas we can think of to bring them back to the big screen. We haven't managed to get anything green-lit by the studios yet, but we're pretty sure it's only a matter of time.

Withnail and I 2: Coming Back In Here
Friday Nov 10, 2017
Friday Nov 10, 2017
It's a family affair on Beyond The Box Set this week, as Harry's brother Sam Chappell pops by to pitch sequels for one of the funniest, saddest and most depraved British movies ever made - Withnail and I, starring Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann.
Released in 1987, Bruce Robinson's semi-autobiographical black comedy was a low-budget independent movie that became one of the most widely quoted cult classics of the era.
Join us as we discuss Camberwell Carrots, questionable cooking, John's extremely in-depth theory about Marwood's latent homosexuality and the classic line from this movie that has haunted us for years...
Discussing drinking games for this film seem almost moot given it practically invented the concept, but in lieu of downing lighter fluid, we came up with some slightly less lethal alternatives.
We also discussed some sequel ideas including an alcohol-fuelled origin story, a bittersweet reunion in the late 90s, and a possibly un-filmable psychological study into the intense co-dependence of the two lead characters.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Thursday Nov 02, 2017
Thursday Nov 02, 2017
Was the public really crying out for an Allan Quatermain movie in 2003? If so, they probably weren't banking on the incoherent mess that is The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, a notorious box office bomb that effectively ended the careers of director Stephen Norrington and star Sean Connery.
This week on Beyond The Box Set, following a request from our pals at the Blokebusters podcast, we revisited The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and tried to figure out how a decent premise ended up going so very, very wrong.
Join us as we attempt to piece together the truly incomprehensible plot of this movie, before imagining what might have been with some course-correcting sequel and reboot ideas. Along the way we also discuss terrible dialogue, Sean Connery's complete lack of effort, heavy-handed literary allusions and much more...
If you're planning to reappraise this movie at some point in the future, we strongly recommend having a drink or three to hand. Fortunately we've also got you covered this episode with some The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen drinking games to ensure your critical functions are nice and dulled by the time the seventh consecutive pointless character introduction rolls around...

Hocus Pocus 2: Fresh Out the Coven
Thursday Oct 19, 2017
Thursday Oct 19, 2017
In the second instalment of our special Halloween mini-series, Harry and John enjoy some prime Bette Midler scenery chewing in the all-time seasonal classic that is Hocus Pocus.
Released in 1993, Hocus Pocus starred Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker as the Sanderson Sisters - a trio of legendary witches who return to their home town of Salem with a vengeance after a troubled teen unwittingly brings them back from the dead. A critical and commercial disappointment on release, the movie is now justly regarded as a riotously entertaining seasonal classic.
Join us as we discuss virgin shaming, fabulous musical numbers and the boldness of opening a children's movie with an infanticide scene. We also come up with some party-friendly Hocus Pocus drinking games, mix in some alternative readings and try to imagine what the long-rumoured sequel to this movie might actually look like.
-----
Each episode of Beyond The Box Set is dedicated to a classic standalone movie that has never - to date - produced a sequel. Every week we get together to give the movie a light-hearted but thorough dissection, before pitching our own ideas for what a theoretical sequel, prequel or spin-off might look like.

The Witches of Eastwick 2: Wizards of Wakefield
Thursday Oct 12, 2017
Thursday Oct 12, 2017
In the first part of our special Halloween-themed trilogy, Harry and John revisit one of the most deliciously camp horror-comedies of the 80s - The Witches of Eastwick.
Starring Jack Nicholson as Satan and Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfieffer as a coven of impeccably styled single mothers, George "Mad Max" Miller's adaptation of the acclaimed John Updike novel is the supernatural smash hit that's been keeping drag queens in fabulous costumes and witty one-liners for the past thirty years.
Join us as discuss perm symmetry, sexual lounging, church freakouts and much more. Along the way, we also come up with some positively sinful drinking games, and of course pitch our own fantasy sequels to this iconic movie, including a gender swapped remake with a twist, and a sequel that ushers in a new generation of bad-ass witches.
Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we watch a classic standalone movie and get together to pitch ridiculous sequel, prequel and remake ideas to bring them back to the big screen. Sunshine: A Toy Story in Space
Friday Oct 06, 2017
Friday Oct 06, 2017
Is Danny Boyle's Sunshine one of the most underrated sci-fi movies of the past decade, or just a boring Sigourney-free version of Alien? Join us as we discuss space botany, weirdly breathy computer voices and heavy-handed character death foreshadowing, all while consistently mispronouncing Cillian Murphy's name.
Of course we also get around to pitching some fantasy sequel ideas, which this week include a Red Dwarf-inspired look at what Mark Strong's Pinbacker got up to while he was waiting around to be a convenient third-act villain, and a surprisingly convincing pitch that this movie should form the basis of the forthcoming fourth Toy Story movie...

Thursday Sep 28, 2017
Thursday Sep 28, 2017
This week on Beyond The Box Set, we're joined by actual professional mermaid Lucy Meredith to discuss Stephen Chow's bizarre 2016 hit 'The Mermaid' - a classic tale of forbidden love featuring horrifying violence, self-immolating octopuses and weaponised sea urchins...
Join us as we attempt to make sense of the ludicrous dialogue, jarring tonal shifts and very distracting extra work, before coming to the conclusion that when a film is this much fun, normal standards don't really apply.
Along the way we also invent some drinking games that should keep any 'The Mermaid' viewing party suitably lubricated and of course pitch our fantasy sequel ideas - this week featuring an English-language remake starring notable surrealist auteur Tommy Wiseau, a Goonies-style under sea adventure and an anthology of equally messed up re-imaginings of classic fairy tales.
At Beyond The Box Set, we take classic standalone movies and compete to see who can come up with the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or remake idea to bring them back to the big screen.
