Django & Broomhilda: Slingers Against Slavers
Friday Sep 06, 2019
Friday Sep 06, 2019
Quentin Tarantino's tribute to spaghetti westerns, Django Unchained certainly packs a punch - not to mention some capital letters ACTING from an Oscar-hungry Leonardo DiCaprio, an Oscar-winning Christof Waltz and a barely-recognisable Samuel L. Jackson...
In this week's podcast we discuss revisionist history, Jamie Foxx's impeccable suit game, the unexpected origin of Big Daddy corp. and much more as we explore the further adventures of Django and his disappointingly passive bride.

Being Benjamin Button
Thursday Apr 04, 2019
Thursday Apr 04, 2019
Over the course of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a man lives an entire lifetime in reverse. After sitting through the three-hour runtime, we felt like we could relate to the experience.
Directed by David Fincher from the short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a fascinating concept with a fundamentally boring character at the centre. Join us on this week's podcast as we discuss extremely variable CGI work, the intense ick-factor of the old man/little girl love story and why Tilda Swinton gave us a very British case of second-hand tea anxiety...
We also have a go at pitching some sequel ideas, including some thoughts on how other notable directors might have handled this story, and a crossover with one of our favourite camp classics from a past episode...

The Dressmaker 2: The Hemsworth Curse
Saturday Mar 16, 2019
Saturday Mar 16, 2019
We're back, you bastards! This week's episode may be arriving slightly late, but we hope the choice of movie justifies the wait. The Dressmaker is a real curio - a hilarious Australian revenge comedy/drama starring Kate Winslet, Liam Hemsworth and a lot of hats, wigs and fabulous evening gowns!
If you've never seen this movie before, we strongly recommend that you seek it out before listening to this episode - it's an absolute riot, and some of the plot twists are so out-there that we'd hate to ruin them for you! But do make sure you come back, because we have a *lot* to talk about...

In addition to pitching sequels to old films, we also watched a lot of new releases in 2018. So we thought we'd end the year with a look back at everything we caught at the cinema over the past 12 months, while also attempting to pitch some very quick sequel ideas for them.
This was a very silly idea that turned into a literal all-nighter, so we've split the results into two parts. Here's part one, in which we ran down everything we saw between January and June. Spoilers abound, obviously!

A Knight's Tale 2: The Gorgeous Ladies of Jousting
Friday Aug 17, 2018
Friday Aug 17, 2018
Fonging hell! We've got a real crowd pleaser to talk about this week - gleefully anachronistic jousting adventure A Knight's Tale, the starring the much-missed Heath Ledger.
Released in 2001, A Knight's Tale helped to establish Ledger as a reliable leading man, after well-received supporting turns in 10 Things I Hate About You and The Patriot. It also featured a memorable cast of supporting characters including Alan Tudyk, Mark Addy and future Marvel star Paul Bettany in the role of a loudmouthed, frequently naked Geoffrey Chaucer.
This week's movie was selected by special guest Jason Croxon, host of the A Conversation With... podcast. Jason joins us on this episode to discuss olde worlde relationship politics, variable accent work, scenery chewing extras and much more.
As always, we also spend the second half of the episode pitching our own fantasy sequel ideas to this feelgood romp - which sadly have to work around the less than cheerful fact of Ledger's tragic death in 2008. How could a spin-off movie ever work in his absence? That's a question we challenge ourselves to answer this week. Tune in now to see how we fared...

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we revisit a classic standalone movie that, for whatever reason, never got an official sequel. Yentl: Master of Disguise
Thursday Jul 05, 2018
Thursday Jul 05, 2018
She sings! She acts! She directs! Barbra Streisand is perhaps the ultimate triple-threat pop icon, and she makes her Beyond The Box Set debut this week as we pitch sequel ideas for her 1983 passion project Yentl...
The story of a plucky young(?) Jewish girl whose insatiable passion for learning drives her to disguise herself as a man, Yentl was a movie over two decades in the making for Streisand. In addition to directing and starring in the movie, she also produced it and co-wrote the screenplay.
Her dedication was rewarded when the movie was released to strong box office returns and enthusiastic reviews - Steven Spielberg famously described the film as "the greatest directorial debut since Citizen Kane" - although his then-girlfriend Amy Irving played the second female lead, so he might have been slightly biased.
In this week's episode we discuss Yentl's surprisingly complex depiction of gender and sexuality, the unexpected sexiness of 80s Mandy Patinkin, why the soft focus lighting is practically a fourth character in this movie and much more... before moving on to sequel pitches that attempt to tackle the eternal question - who could possibly replace Barbra Streisand in a movie?

Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we pitch fictional sequel ideas for classic standalone movies. From iconic hits like Titanic and Forrest Gump to cult hits and forgettable Jennifer Lopez vehicles - there's nothing we can't spin out into a fantasy franchise...

Three Kings 2: Three Wise Men (feat. FlixWatcher)
Thursday Jun 21, 2018
Thursday Jun 21, 2018
In a very special Podcast crossover episode, Helen and Kobi from FlixWatcher join us to discuss David O.Russell's darkly comedic Gulf War movie Three Kings, starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube.
Released in 1999, Three Kings was a major breakthrough for O.Russell, grossing over $100 million and achieving widespread critical acclaim. It tells the story of four US soldiers attempting to steal a hidden cache of war gold from Iraqi soldiers during a tense 1991 ceasefire between the two countries, until a series of surprisingly brutal mishaps turn their adventure into a rescue mission.
Join us as we discuss on-set tensions, Mark Wahlberg's journey from The Funky Bunch to serious actor and the time Harry went on a family holiday to Iraq, before attempting to navigate our near-total ignorance of middle-eastern geopolitics in pursuit of some workable sequel ideas...

Of Mice And Men 2: Of Mice And Ben
Thursday Apr 12, 2018
Thursday Apr 12, 2018
When we first launched Beyond The Box Set back in early 2017, little did we imagine that just over a year later we'd find ourselves reading out self-composed gay Of Mice And Men fan fiction to each other. And yet, here we are...
Of Mice And Men is the 1992 adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic novella, starring Gary Sinise and John Malkovich as George Milton and Lennie Small, two fiercely loyal companions searching for work and dreaming of buying their own farm during the Great American Depression.
Sinise also directs the movie, making it the second part in our accidental mini-series of movies by directors better known for appearing in front of the camera. It's the kind of reverently faithful adaptations of a classic text that seems to have fallen out of fashion a little bit these days, but what it lacks in invention it more than makes up for in heart and soul.
After comparing (Cliffs)notes on our experiences with the book and film back in our high school days - awkward use of racially charged profanities and all - we get down to the daunting task of pitching sequels to one of the most beloved works of literature of the 20th century. Never let it be said we're not ambitious...
