Withnail and I 2: Coming Back In Here
Friday Nov 10, 2017
Friday Nov 10, 2017
It's a family affair on Beyond The Box Set this week, as Harry's brother Sam Chappell pops by to pitch sequels for one of the funniest, saddest and most depraved British movies ever made - Withnail and I, starring Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann.
Released in 1987, Bruce Robinson's semi-autobiographical black comedy was a low-budget independent movie that became one of the most widely quoted cult classics of the era.
Join us as we discuss Camberwell Carrots, questionable cooking, John's extremely in-depth theory about Marwood's latent homosexuality and the classic line from this movie that has haunted us for years...
Discussing drinking games for this film seem almost moot given it practically invented the concept, but in lieu of downing lighter fluid, we came up with some slightly less lethal alternatives.
We also discussed some sequel ideas including an alcohol-fuelled origin story, a bittersweet reunion in the late 90s, and a possibly un-filmable psychological study into the intense co-dependence of the two lead characters.
---------
Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we watch a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas we can think of to bring them back to the big screen. We haven't managed to get anything green-lit by the studios yet, but we're pretty sure it's only a matter of time.

The Witches 2: Mousetrap

In the final instalment of our Halloween mini-season, Harry and John are joined by the velvet-voiced Paul Kelly to pitch sequels for Nicolas Roeg's genuinely terrifying adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Witches.
Join us as we reminisce about the many, many ways this movie traumatised us as children - including gaslighting grandmas, Anjelica Huston's facial genitalia, truly horrifying special effects work and much more.
Once we've thoroughly relived our childhood nightmares, we also set about creating some brand new ones with our characteristically offbeat sequel suggestions for this classic alleged family film. This week's ideas include an Alien crossover, a John Wick-style neo noir following former rodent Luke's ongoing vendetta against the dark forces, and a sitcom inspired by the clearly terrible customer service on display at Rowan Atkinson's Hotel Excelsior...

Is Interstellar Christopher Nolan’s funniest movie? This week on Beyond The Box Set, we’re joined by super fan Joe Timothy to pitch sequels to the time travel space epic that somehow makes room for a wisecracking robot and some unintentionally hilarious cameos…
Along the way, we debate NASA’s questionable training strategies, Anne Hathaway’s baby problem and whether a movie about wormholes and time travel is pushing credibility a little too far by expecting us to believe that Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain are the same age…
As ever, once we’ve fully talked out the movie itself, we get down to business with some fantasy sequel ideas. This week’s pitches include a deep sleep entertainment program that finds Cooper and Brand playing through a virtual Christopher Nolan Greatest Hits, a tense psychological thriller with a Fight Club-esque twist and a crossover into a galaxy far, far away…
Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequels, prequels and spin-offs to bring them back to the big screen. You are tearing us apart, listeners! This week on Beyond The Box Set, we’re pitching sequels to a feature that’s more meme than movie – Tommy Wiseau’s baffling, brilliant The Room. Joined by super fan Sebastian Clark, we discuss the movie’s clear Shakespearean parallels, Lisa’s limitless capacity for evil, Denny’s major boundary issues and the character whose tragic arc brings John to tears mid-podcast.
As is the tradition, we also pitch our own sequel ideas for the film, including a Gosford Park-style period remake, a reincarnated Johnny’s quest for revenge and a surprise Westworld crossover revealing that – spoiler alert! – the cast and crew were actually robots the whole time. Which, let’s face it, would certainly explain the acting…

In our first ever Beyond The Box Set Guest episode, Ross Burton from Beer, Pizza & A Movie joins us to pitch sequels, prequels and spin-offs for Sergio Leone’s classic 1966 Spaghetti Western The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.
From a Zootopia crossover to a high school grave robbing comedy, by way of a thinly veiled dig at Star Wars Rogue One and other pointless prequels, after listening to this episode you’ll never hear that iconic Ennio Morricone score in quite the same way again…
