Hocus Pocus 2: Fresh Out the Coven
Thursday Oct 19, 2017
Thursday Oct 19, 2017
In the second instalment of our special Halloween mini-series, Harry and John enjoy some prime Bette Midler scenery chewing in the all-time seasonal classic that is Hocus Pocus.
Released in 1993, Hocus Pocus starred Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker as the Sanderson Sisters - a trio of legendary witches who return to their home town of Salem with a vengeance after a troubled teen unwittingly brings them back from the dead. A critical and commercial disappointment on release, the movie is now justly regarded as a riotously entertaining seasonal classic.
Join us as we discuss virgin shaming, fabulous musical numbers and the boldness of opening a children's movie with an infanticide scene. We also come up with some party-friendly Hocus Pocus drinking games, mix in some alternative readings and try to imagine what the long-rumoured sequel to this movie might actually look like.

Each episode of Beyond The Box Set is dedicated to a classic standalone movie that has never - to date - produced a sequel. Every week we get together to give the movie a light-hearted but thorough dissection, before pitching our own ideas for what a theoretical sequel, prequel or spin-off might look like.

From the return of the Child Catcher – now paired with a murderous Mary Poppins impersonator – to an origin story so bleak it’d have to be directed by Lars Von Trier, if you like your family movies served with a side of surreal black comedy, download our latest episode toot suite!

Patty cake sex games, horrifying toon-on-toon violence and a traumatic act of Shoe-icide – Who Framed Roger Rabbit might me the most unlikely smash hit of the 80s. This week on Beyond The Box Set we revisit the Robert Zemeckis classic and pitch sequel ideas including a modern whodunnit involving the murder of a beloved Pixar icon and a toon sex coverup conspiracy involving America’s first family…

Super Mario Bros 2: The Quest for Peach

A notorious box office bomb that couldn’t even get basic colour coordination right, this week on Beyond The Box Set we’re pitching sequel ideas for the 1993 Super Mario Bros movie.
It’s hard to come up with story ideas even half as demented as the utterly nonsensical plot of this movie, but whether it’s an all-star reboot featuring Scarface and Amy Poehler or a bleak direct sequel that opens at Mario’s funeral and ends in an animated bloodbath, we can definitely say we gave it our best shot…
