See You Yesterday
Monday Jun 22, 2020
Monday Jun 22, 2020
With a plot that features striking parallels to the tragic recent events that sparked the global Black Lives Matter protests, we were initially concerned that See You Yesterday might prove to be too bleak for us to talk about humorously. Thankfully, the debut feature from writer-director Stefon Bristol is as charming and entertaining as it is thought provoking, offering a thoroughly modern take on the well-worn 'teens discover time travel' trope.
Initially filmed as a short, which fortuitously fell into the hands of producer Spike Lee, See You Yesterday stars Eden Duncan-Smith and Danté Crichlow as a pair of New York youths with a passion for engineering, who improbably invent a working time machine for a high school project. Being teenagers, they immediately use their new-found powers to spy on their past selves and hurl slushies at an obnoxious ex-boyfriend - until tragedy strikes and the film takes a powerful turn.
To say much more would be to spoil things, but suffice to say we both highly recommend this movie - which is available for streaming right now on Netflix. On this week's podcast, we break down the plot, brainstorm some drinking games and attempt to work the intentionally ambiguous ending into some sequel pitches.

Normally, this is the place where we'd flog our Patreon page and ask for some reviews - but given the subject matter of this film and the moment of history we're currently living through, that doesn't feel quite appropriate. Instead, we'd like to strongly encourage you to donate to some BLM charities, do some learning, make your voice heard - or just make a point of watching a few more films by directors who aren't white men.
If you're interested in the former, here are some very good foundations who are well worth your support:

Room To Breathe
Monday Apr 27, 2020
Monday Apr 27, 2020
With the world in turmoil and no end to the global lockdown in sight, we're all feeling a little fragile right now. In other words, it's the perfect time to indulge in some lighthearted, escapist comfort cinema to distract from the harsher realities of post-Coronavirus life. Unfortunately, Harry made a different choice this week, so we're watching Room.
Directed by Lenny Abrahamson and starring Brie Larson, Joan Allen and Jacob Tremblay, Room tells the harrowing story of a young woman struggling to protect her five-year old son from the harsh realities of life in captivity, after spending seven years locked in the tiny back yard shed of a sadistic kidnapper. Highly acclaimed on release, it earned Larson a well-deserved Academy Award for Best Actress. A feelgood romp though, it is not.
Tune into this week's episode to hear our thoughts on lockdown coping techniques, who cried the most during this movie, our toughest drinking game challenge yet and of course, sequel pitches.
We promise we'll have something a bit less emotionally draining on the table next week...

Wonka: Chapter 2 (feat. Pete Allison)
Friday Feb 28, 2020
Friday Feb 28, 2020
Murder, fat shaming, nightmarish steamboat rides - terrifying childhood classics don't come much more traumatic than Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, the first major movie adaptation of Roald Dahl's bestselling 1964 novel.
BBC Radio DJ Pete Allison drops by this week to discuss the many, many ways in which this film delighted and scarred us in equal measure, before pitching in with some sequel ideas that conveniently ignore the fact that Charlie & The Great Glass Elevator and that Tim Burton reboot ever happened...

Christmas With The Kranks 2: Ripping off The Kranks
Friday Dec 27, 2019
Friday Dec 27, 2019
For our final festive selection of 2019, our Patreon supporters have inflicted a real turkey on us. Released in 2004, Christmas With The Kranks is a dire yuletide comedy in which wealthy boomers Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis battle an insane horde of Santa obsessives while attempting to skip out on the Holiday season for a year. If that sounds like a fun premise, trust us, we're over-selling it...
Tune into this week's podcast to hear our thoughts on feline cruelty, out-of-place cancer sub-plots and a level of unexamined privilige and flagrant over-spending that makes The Holiday look like a Ken Loach movie...
As always, we've also got drinking games, listener submissions and our own sequel ideas to give this cinematic lump of coal some kind of redemptive quality. The perfect antidote to Festive fatigue!

Thursday Dec 12, 2019
Thursday Dec 12, 2019
What's this? What's this?!
Why, it's the latest festive episode of Beyond The Box Set, in which we're pitching sequels for Disney's ghoulish stop-motion classic The Nightmare Before Christmas. Released in 1993, the movie tells the story of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween-town who becomes disillusioned with his annual duties and decides to take a crack at Christmas instead.
Tune into this episode to hear our thoughts on the twisted mind of Tim Burton, the joy of terrorising small children, the disturbing implications of Thanksgiving-town, plus drinking games, listener submissions and much more...

The Holiday 2: Daddy Issues
Friday Dec 06, 2019
Friday Dec 06, 2019
Like a warm plate of Christmas Fettuccine, The Holiday may not be the most nutritious festive treat on the market, but damn if it doesn't hit the spot, despite our best efforts at maintaining our cynicism...
Starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black, Nancy Meyers' Atlantic-straddling hit exists in that strange Rom-Com fantasy world where money is no object, every house is either a beautifully isolated British cottage or a lavish L.A. mansion decorated with actual chandeliers and flying across the world at the drop of a hat requires no forward planning or adjustment of work/social schedules.
In other words, it should be completely insufferable, but by some Christmas miracle we both found ourselves irresistibly drawn in. Tune into this week's podcast to hear our thoughts on dodgy British geography, the eerie physical perfection of Jude Law, knitwear porn and much more.

Left Behind 2: Highway To Hell (feat. Chris Scott)
Friday Jun 28, 2019
Friday Jun 28, 2019
For the second time this month, our disaster movie season lands on the bizarre latter-day career choices of Nicholas Cage. Based on a bestselling Christian book series, 2014's Left Behind is a low-budget, shoddily made train wreck that not even Jesus could save from box office oblivion.
With the help of our special guest Chris Scott from the Ask Karen podcast, we spend this week's episode discussing important spiritual matters such as Nicholas Cage's alarming headpiece, the suspiciously porn star-sounding character names, dwarf kicking, air hostess slut shaming and much more.
Along the way we also have the usual collection of drinking games - and trust us, you'll need it for this one - listener submissions and of course, sequel pitches! Given that this movie was intended to kickstart a nine-part franchise, theoretically we should have plenty to work with. You'll have to tune in to discover just how that turned out...
