Scrooged 2: Oliver Twisted (feat. 2 Geeks 2 Movies)
Thursday Dec 27, 2018
Thursday Dec 27, 2018
A cynical 80s update of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol with Bill Murray in the central role, Scrooged has all the elements of a festive home run. Yet back in 1988 critics received the movie like a lump of festive coal, and even Murray himself was publicly critical of his performance.
Nevertheless, years of TV syndication have helped Scrooged to endure as a cult holiday classic. Did the critics get it wrong, or has Murray's boundless charisma hoodwinked contemporary viewers into looking back at the film with rose tinted glasses?
To help us find the answer, we're re-joined this week by our most consistently available guest, Ross Burton from 2 Geeks 2 Movies. Together we discuss how Scrooged compares to other popular A Christmas Carol adaptations, whether we really believe Murray's change of character will last beyond the Holiday season, and why, depending on who you ask, Carol Kane's psychotic sugar plum fairy is either the best or the worst part of this movie...

Jack Frost 2: The Meltdown
Friday Dec 21, 2018
Friday Dec 21, 2018
The year is 1998. Michael Keaton plays an absent father who, after being tragically killed on his way home for Christmas, reincarnates in the form of a wisecracking snowman in order to re-connect with his traumatised son. Sounds like a movie with all the makings of a feelgood seasonal classic, right? Wrong...
A notorious festive turkey that critics dubbed 'grotesque' 'creepy' and 'almost unwatchable', Jack Frost received an equally chilly reception at the box office, and endures now only due to its reputation as one of the worst and most wrongheaded family movies ever made.
So, naturally, we just couldn't wait to talk about it. Tune into this week's podcast to hear us sound off on 15 minute musical sequences, tin-eared dialogue, the inexplicable logistics of possessing the body of a snowman and much more.

Elf 2: How Buddy Saved Christmas
Thursday Dec 13, 2018
Thursday Dec 13, 2018
Will Ferrell has repeatedly ruled out making a sequel for Elf, his festive 2004 comedy hit that rapidly became a seasonable staple. After the muted reaction to the belated Anchorman and Zoolander sequels in recent years, he may have a point...
Yet despite Ferrell's lack of enthusiasm, the appetite for an Elf 2 seems to grow stronger with every passing year. Is this just lazy nostalgia at work, or is there really potential for a follow-up that could wouldn't taint memories of the widely-loved original?
For this week's episode of Beyond The Box Set, John and (a very hung over) Harry summon as much Christmas spirit as they can muster as they attempt to figure out what makes this particular Christmas film so enormously popular, and where a theoretical sequel could actually take Ferrell and friends the second time around...
----
Each week on Beyond The Box Set, hosts Harry Chappell and John Lucas compete to pitch sequels, prequels and spin-off ideas for a different standalone movie. Currently midway through our annual festive season, we're spreading cinematic good cheer wherever we go and proving that, unlike a puppy, a sequel can be for life and for Christmas.

The Birdcage 2: Starina Rides Again
Friday Nov 23, 2018
Friday Nov 23, 2018
Put simply, 'The Birdcage' is one of the funniest movies ever made. Yes, it's a remake of the much-loved French classic La cage aux folles, but it's elevated above standard remake fare by inspired casting across the board and a strong emotional centre in the midst of all the camp farce.
A sequel without Robin Williams is obviously almost impossible to imagine, but we did find ourselves wondering how Nathan Lane's flamboyant Albert would cope with the loss of his remarkably patient life partner. Not to mention the tantalising/terrifying notion of how Agador Spartacus' personal style might have evolved as he entered his mid-fifties...

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. The Way Way Back...to the Way Way Back (feat. Charlie Dudley)
Thursday Nov 08, 2018
Thursday Nov 08, 2018
After a month of Halloween horror, we needed something to lift our spirits this week. Thankfully, special guest Charlie Dudley (of Why Did I Do That? and A Podcast for Everyone) was on hand with The Way Way Back - a sweet natured summer coming-of-age movie that managed to warm even our cold, cynical hearts.
Written by Oscar winners Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, The Way Way Back stars Liam James as a shy 14 year old reluctantly accompanying his mother (Toni Collette) and her domineering boyfriend (Steve Carrell) on a summer vacation. While there he befriends a charming water park manager played by Sam Rockwell, who helps him to escape the endless humiliation of his family life with a part-time job and some questionable, but effective, life lessons.
Featuring a hilarious supporting cast including Alison Janney, Maya Rudolph and Amanda Peet, The Way Way Back is a hidden gem were were extremely happy to discover. Tune into this week's episode for our thoughts on questionable water park ethics, offensive capri pants, Steve Carrell's effective against-cast performance as an irredeemable douchebag and much more.
As always, we also pitch our own sequel ideas for the movie, which this week include a couple of equally bittersweet reunion movies, and one rather less wholesome left-turn into the murky realm of adult partner swapping... Look, it makes sense in context, OK?

Thursday Nov 01, 2018
Thursday Nov 01, 2018
Halloween may be over, but our Horror movie season extends for another week as we're joined by special guest Mark Reid to discuss 'Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon', a spoof documentary following a surprisingly affable serial killer in training.
Join us as we discuss serial killer cardio, the final girl trope, the correlation between murderers and magic nerds and much more. We also pitch our own sequel ideas for this hilarious horror, including Leslie's inevitable - albeit slightly less impressive - return from the grave, a comic book twist on the film's mockumentary format and a serial killer summer camp movie that sees the hunters becoming the hunted.

Dog Soldiers 2: Shadow of the Wolf
Thursday Oct 11, 2018
Thursday Oct 11, 2018
It's week two of our Halloween 'Season of the Wolf', and we're moving from Japanese anime to a very British take on the Werewolf movie genre - Neil Marshall's 2002 cult hit Dog Soldiers. Join us as we discuss our new-found appreciation for Sean Pertwee, Liam Cunningham's striking resemblence to Jean Reno and one of the greatest exit lines in cinema history...
An official sequel to Dog Soldiers was actually on the cards for a while, but sadly it never quite came to fruition. We have some ideas for how it might have looked though, including a TV sitcom crossover, a Taika Waititi-inspired mockumentary and a prequel that fleshes out Kevin McKidd's strong on-screen aversion to dog murder.

The Big Lebowski 2: Finding Donny (feat. Genuine Chit Chat)
Thursday Sep 13, 2018
Thursday Sep 13, 2018
With an endlessly quoteable script from The Coen Brothers and career-defining performances from Jeff Bridges and John Goodman, The Big Lebowski is probably the ultimate slacker comedy. Mike Burton from Genuine Chit Chat joins us this week to discuss his abiding love of the movie - and to help us to pitch a few sequels.
Tune in as we discuss White Russians, incomprehensible kidnapping plots, John's strong erotic reaction to Jeff Bridges acid dancing and how this movie unexpectedly brought out Harry's reactionary side.
As always, after we're done waxing nostalgic about the movie, we move on to pitching our own fantasy sequel ideas - all of which mysterious hinge on the tragic fate of Donny, the unsung hero of The Dude's bowling team. Can our storytelling skills finally grant him the justice he deserves? There's only one way to find out...

Death Becomes Her 2: Ghost Protocol
Thursday Aug 30, 2018
Thursday Aug 30, 2018
We were in dire need of a comedy palate cleanser after sitting through the dreadful 'Sausage Party' for last week's episode, so John decided that the time was right to bring out an all-time favourite. Death Becomes Her is probably the only movie that gives you two Oscar-winning actresses rising from the grave and beating each other over the head with shovels.
Directed by the always visually inventive Robert Zemeckis, what Death Becomes Her lacks in subtlety, it more than makes up for in crazed, campy and endlessly quotable entertainment. Join us as we discuss warring divas, Isabella Rosellini going full panto and why we love Bruce Willis playing cartoonishly against type.
We also put our heads together to pitch some belated sequel ideas, which this week include a global immortality epidemic, the return of the shadowy Big Daddy corporation and a conspiracy theory involving another iconic - and strangely ageless - Hollywood A-Lister.
