Napoleon Dynamite's High School Reunion
Thursday Sep 12, 2019
Thursday Sep 12, 2019
A micro-budget indie comedy with no recognisable stars, Napoleon Dynamite was a surprise crossover smash in 2004. However, it was also highly divisive - and up until now, John has actively avoided watching it. Can Harry and this week's special guest convince him to overcome his prejudices, or will this movie land like a cold slab of steak to the face?
Tune into this week's episode to hear our thoughts on unlikable characters, questionable timelines, inexplicable Llamas and disgusting, disgusting food - plus our usual combination of drinking games, listener reviews and fantasy sequel pitches that attempt to imagine where Napoleon, Kip, Deb, Pedro and Uncle Rico might be today...

Maximum Overdrive 2: Attack of the Drones
Thursday Aug 29, 2019
Thursday Aug 29, 2019
Stephen King may have written the novels that inspired dozens of iconic movies, but he's directed only one... the 80s gonzo epic 'Maximum Overdrive'.
Even King himself disowns this film as a cocaine-fuelled disaster these days, but could its audacious blend of gore, comedy and heavy metal be due for re-appraisal? Find out in this week's episode, as we discuss overly specific back-stories, terrible performances by future Simpsons actors, the definition of a road twitch and more...

Dangerous Liaisons: Children of the Revolution
Thursday Apr 18, 2019
Thursday Apr 18, 2019
Our Glenn Close mini-season - which we're now dubbing 'Close Encounters of the Glenn Kind' - continues with an episode dedicated to Dangerous Liaisons, in which the actress gives one of her most memorably villainous performances as the scheming aristocrat Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil.
Directed by Stephen Frears and co-starring John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer and Uma Thurman, Dangerous Liaisons has it all - intrigue, seduction and many, many wigs. In other words, it should be a perfect Beyond The Box Set movie. Unfortunately, one of us didn't quite end up seeing things that way...
Tune into this week's episode to hear our thoughts on bedtime wigs, a classic distracting Keanu Reeves performance, the film's surprisingly abrupt ending and much more, plus drinking games and of course, our sequel pitches.

Fatal Attraction 2: Bitches Be Crazy
Friday Apr 12, 2019
Friday Apr 12, 2019
Having recently discovered that Harry has only ever seen two Glenn Close movies in his life - one of which being Guardians of the Galaxy - we decided to dedicate a season to the iconic 7-time Oscar non-winner. First up, the terrifying 80s erotic thriller Fatal Attraction...
In this movie, Glenn stars as Alex Forrest, a successful career woman who reacts rather poorly to being discarded by married sleaze-ball Michael Douglas after a one night stand. It starts as a compelling examination of mental illness and ends as a fairly silly thriller, but Glenn's performance is one for the ages, and the movie was a genre-defining smash on release.
Tune in to hear our thoughts on dishwater sex (we're against it), the terrible mistreatment of poor Quincey the dog in this movie, and why Michael Douglas deserved pretty much everything he got...
Oh yeah and sequel pitches, drinking games, etc. You know the drill.

E.T. The Extra Terrestrial - LIVE! (feat. Kenrick & Miller)
Friday Jan 25, 2019
Friday Jan 25, 2019
We did it! To celebrate our 100th(!) episode of Beyond The Box Set, we decided to take a bold step into the Podcasting big leagues by hosting our very first live episode!
Obviously a major moment requires a major movie choice, so in front of a specially invited audience at our favourite pub, The Chemic Tavern in Leeds, we decided to pitch some sequel ideas for the Steven Spielberg classic E.T. The Extra Terrestrial.
Tune in to hear us thoroughly dissect some of the movie's most iconic scenes - with a little help from guest comics Kenrick & Miller - before attempting our most ambitious, creative and possibly nonsensical sequel pitch ever!
Huge thanks to everyone who turned up on the night, and everyone who listens to this episode! It's kind of a big deal for us and while it may be a little chaotic, it's truly a labour of love!
Here's to the next 100...

In addition to pitching sequels to old films, we also watched a lot of new releases in 2018. So we thought we'd end the year with a look back at everything we caught at the cinema over the past 12 months, while also attempting to pitch some very quick sequel ideas for them.
This was a very silly idea that turned into a literal all-nighter, so we've split the results into two parts. Here's part one, in which we ran down everything we saw between January and June. Spoilers abound, obviously!
You can listen to full-length review episodes for all of these films by subscribing to our Patreon for as little as $2 per month.

Scrooged 2: Oliver Twisted (feat. 2 Geeks 2 Movies)
Thursday Dec 27, 2018
Thursday Dec 27, 2018
A cynical 80s update of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol with Bill Murray in the central role, Scrooged has all the elements of a festive home run. Yet back in 1988 critics received the movie like a lump of festive coal, and even Murray himself was publicly critical of his performance.
Nevertheless, years of TV syndication have helped Scrooged to endure as a cult holiday classic. Did the critics get it wrong, or has Murray's boundless charisma hoodwinked contemporary viewers into looking back at the film with rose tinted glasses?
To help us find the answer, we're re-joined this week by our most consistently available guest, Ross Burton from 2 Geeks 2 Movies. Together we discuss how Scrooged compares to other popular A Christmas Carol adaptations, whether we really believe Murray's change of character will last beyond the Holiday season, and why, depending on who you ask, Carol Kane's psychotic sugar plum fairy is either the best or the worst part of this movie...

Blue Velvet - An Antz Perspective
Thursday Aug 02, 2018
Thursday Aug 02, 2018
Blue Velvet - an iconic movie of the 80s, but perhaps not the most compatible movie for the consumption of omelettes. That's just one of the many lessons we learned while attempting to make sense of David Lynch's twisted suburban noir.
Join us in this week's episode as we discuss the sinister appeal of Kyle Maclachlan, Isabella Rosellini's rather limited nightclub repertoir, and why, in a movie filled with terror and violence, a Roy Orbison lip sync number might just be the scariest scene of all...
David Lynch doesn't really do traditional sequels, but we like to think he'd approve of some of our sequel ideas this week, including an unlikely children's movie set inside a certain severed appendage, a sitcom retelling - complete with laugh track - and a Dennis Hopper origin story with some controversial re-casting choices...

Labyrinth 2: Revenge of the Goblin Queen
Friday Jul 13, 2018
Friday Jul 13, 2018
A disturbed teenage girl. A baby-snatching goblin king with a distractingly prominent codpiece. A supporting cast of creature features ranging from bizarre to frankly terrifying. Every scene of Jim Henson's Labyrinth is burned into the memories of a generation of movie viewers.
With the late-great David Bowie taking the iconic role of Jareth, the aforementioned well endowed Goblin King, any proposed sequel to this 80s classic would have to wrestle with the unthinkable prospect of recasting. Who could possibly step into his shoes? This week on Beyond The Box Set, we've challenged ourselves to come up with some ideas...
Labyrinth is a rare film that we both have equally strong memories of, proving that despite initially poor box office returns, the movie enjoys a truly timeless appeal. Join us on this week's episode as we discuss bad acting vs dream acting, the bizarre genius of the Bog of Eternal Stench and why Sir Didymus is the absolute worst...
