#52 | 22 Short Films About Snowpiercer

February 15, 2018
00:0000:00

Imagine the worst train journey you've ever taken. Now, throw in baby-eating, a post-apocalyptic caste system and a demented Tilda Swinton ranting about shoes in a broad Yorkshire accent. Welcome to Bong Joon-ho's quirky sci-fi action hit Snowpiercer. It's quite the ride...

Released in 2013, Snowpiercer features an all-star cast including Chris Evans, Octavia Spencer, Tilda Swinton and John Hurt as the last remnants of humanity scrapping for survival aboard a high-speed train controlled by the mysterious and God-like 'Wilfred'. The film was acclaimed for its bold visual style and inventive action sequences. It is also completely insane.

This week on Beyond The Box Set, we discuss cool but nonsensical fight scenes, Tilda Swinton's gloriously off-kilter acting choices and why it's weird to be grossed out by Cockroach bars when you've already chowed down on a baby...

As is the tradition, we also pitch our own fantasy sequel ideas to the movie, including an anthology movie featuring the many bizarre characters who populate the original film, our first ever 'Make It a Video Game!' and a crossover with the biggest romantic blockbuster of all time...

-------

Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. Our show is available on virtually all major podcasting platforms, including iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and Podbean.

We recently launched on Patreon, allowing our listeners to access a whole raft of fabulous bonus content including our weekly bonus show 'Beyond BTBS', a 30 second ad slot on our main show and the opportunity to become a character in one of our sequels. We also have our own line of merchandise on TeePublic.com, including T-shirts, mugs, iphone cases and more.

#50 | Forrest Gump II: Jenny’s Side

February 2, 2018
00:0000:00

Episode 50 marks Beyond The Box Set's first full year on the air, so we knew we had to celebrate with a truly iconic movie choice. So sit down and join us as we pitch sequels to the tearjerking 90s classic Forrest Gump, aka Harry's all-time favourite movie.

In this episode we compare notes on how long each of us lasted before welling up, reveal the historical crossover scene that was wisely left on the cutting room floor, and debate whether Jenny Curran is the most unfairly maligned cinema character of the past thirty years...

We also bring you a bumper selection of drinking games, including needlessly shirtless Lieutenant Dan, every time Jenny's wigs signify a time jump and the occasional hints of Mama Gump's dark side...

Over twenty years after Tom Hanks hung up his running shoes and put little Haley Joel Osment onto the bus, it seems increasingly unlikely that a real Forrest Gump sequel will ever come to pass. Not that we let that spoil our fun as we dedicate the second half of this episode to pitching ridiculous follow-up ideas, including Colin Hanks as a young Forrest undertaking an improbable journey through the plot lines of some of Tom Hanks most famous films - trust us, there was enough to go on...

Finally, we also marked our one-year anniversary by finally launching our own dedicated Patreon and Merchendise pages. For as little as £2 per month, you could become a VIP subscriber for access to our weekly bonus episodes, a 30 second shout-out on the show and the chance to become a character in one of our sequel ideas! Just visit our Patreon Page for more information.

T-shirts, mugs, iphone covers and other assorted Beyond The Box Set accessories are also now available via our Teepublic online store

Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalond movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. We're currently featured as a 'Binge Worthy Podcast' on the Apple store, and we've frequently cracked the top ten TV & Film Podcasts on UK iTunes.

In other words, our first year has been a wild ride and we don't intend to get off any time soon. You can help support the show by hitting subscribe for a new episode every Friday morning, or by leaving us a review on the Apple store. You can now also support us as an official VIP supporter on Patreon, using our pay as you feel model to gain access to a huge raft of amazing extras (if we do say so ourselves...)

#48 | Kiss Kiss Bang Bang 2: Ding Dong & Dynamite (feat. Easy Riders Raging Podcast)

January 19, 2018
00:0000:00

It's the whip-smart cult comedy that revived Robert Downey Jr.'s career and rescued us from the prospect of Johnny Knoxville headlining the Iron Man Franchise. Shane Black's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang combines classic Neo Noir references with a distinctly 21st century sensibility, making it just the kind of curious genre-crossover we love to sink our teeth into...

With the invaluable assistance of our special guest Chris Johnston of Easy Riders Raging Podcast, we attempt to wrap our heads around the insanely convoluted plot of this movie, debate whether it's OK to shamelessly objectify your female lead if you make a point of being self aware about it and question just what exactly the root cause might be of Val Kilmer's increasingly alarming facial dimensions...

Naturally we also get down to some sequel ideas, which this week include a Rush Hour-inspired location switch, a deconstruction of the original movie's obsession with gay panic jokes and a lot of really terrible plays on the title. Kiss Kiss Cillit Bang, anyone?

------

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. We've covered everything from timeless blockbusters to beloved cult classics, and quite possibly ruined them all with our sacreligious and frequently unfilmable reboot concepts.

If you like the show, please hit subscribe to get a new episode every Friday morning, and leave us a review on your preferred Podcasting app to really make our day. You can also reach out to us on most forms of social media, or through our official website.

BONUS | Pitching Sequels to the Movies of 2017: Part Two

December 31, 2017
00:0000:00

The second half of 2017 gave us blockbusters of wildly varying quality - from the artistic and commercial highs of Dunkirk and Baby Driver to the wildly misguided lows of Justice League and Geostorm. We also made time for some less mainstream fare, including Kumail Nanjiani's delightful The Big Sick, James Franco's hilarious The Disaster Artist and Darren Aronofsky's utterly batshit Mother!

Join us in this second half of our year-end special as we attempt to pitch quick-fire sequels to every movie we caught in the cinema between July and December. As before, spoiler warnings do apply to all the movies we describe in this episode, but we'll try to give you plenty of warning.

December 28, 2017
00:0000:00

From depressing Oscar contenders to terrible franchise movies, we watched a lot of movies in 2017 that wouldn't necessarily fit the Beyond The Box Set format. So we thought it'd be fun to round off the year with a quick-fire run through everything we saw in the cinema this year, complete with improvised sequel pitches.

Join us in the first part of this mammoth undertaking, in which we vainly attempt to remember the plots of some of the movies we saw from January to June 2017. WARNING - spoilers abound for all of the movies we discuss in this episode, but we'll give you plenty of warning to hit the skip button if there's anything you havent gotten around to yet...

-------

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we watch a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. Over the course of 2017 we've pitched sequels for stone-cold classics like Gladiator, Titanic and The Truman Show, cult favourites such as The Room, District 9 and Heathers... plus more questionable releases including 50 First Dates, Knights of Badassdom and the Super Mario Bros movie.

#43 | Krampus 2: The Satan Clause

December 8, 2017
00:0000:00

A horror-comedy about a Bavarian Christmas demon who feasts on the flesh of naughty children? Starring Adam Scott, Toni Collette and a gun-toting Conchata Ferrell? On paper Krampus sounds like our kind of holiday movie... but a messy script and a lot of uncomfortable tonal shifts left us feeling a little disappointed.

That said, there was enough visual invention and dark humour in Michael Dougherty's 2015 take on this twisted European folk tale to give us plenty to talk about in this episode. Join us as we discuss ambiguously Austrian grannies, psychotic gingerbread men and the right way to incorporate baby-eating into a family comedy...

As always, we also brainstorm a few drinking games - including neglectful parenting, inappropriate reactions and instances of 'Adam Scott face' - before coming up with some fantasy sequel ideas. Would a twisted take on Tim Allen's The Santa Clause or an action-packed Stranger Things crossover help this franchise to achieve a more comfortable balance of horror and comedy? We actually think they might...

--------

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we review a classic standalone movie, before competing to pitch fantasy sequel, prequel or remake ideas to bring them back to the big screen. From The Room as a period piece to the Sunshine/Toy Story crossover nobody was ever asking for, our ideas are unexpected, unconventional... and frequently totally unfilmable.

If you enjoy the show, please hit subscribe on your preferred podcasting platform to hear a new episode every Friday. Beyond The Box Set is available for free download and streaming on iTunes, Stitcher, aCast, Podbean, Pocket Casts, Youtube, Google Play and more.

Leaving us a review is the absolute best way to help our show to find new listeners, so if you can spare some nice words and a star or five on iTunes or Stitcher, our gratitude would be eternal.

#41 | The Shining 2: Ghost Hotel

November 23, 2017
00:0000:00

As an object lesson in terror, it's hard to beat Stanley Kubrick's 1980 hotel horror 'The Shining'. Starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall as a seriously dysfunctional married couple who choose the wrong hotel for a winter of intense one-on-one time, the movie was a tortured production that scored derisive reviews at the time, but has now been reappraised as a pinnacle of its genre.

In this week's episode, John and Harry discuss red flag job interviews, debate the reasonable level of hysteria when confronted by an axe-wielding maniac, unpick the most inept rescue attempt ever committed to film and much more...

This week's fantasy sequel ideas include a discussion on Stephen King's official followup - which is literally about a psychic cat - and our own, only slightly more out-there, reboot ideas including a Black Mirror-inspired reality remake and a comedy crossover with a controversial failed franchise movie...

-----

Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we revisit a famous standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas we can come up with to bring them back to the big screen. We also brainstorm a handy set of drinking games for every film we cover - which we encourage you to enjoy responsibly and non-litigiously.

If you enjoy our little show, please hit subscribe via your preferred Podcasting service to hear a new episode free every Friday morning. We put a deceptive amount of hard work into what we do, so if you could leave us a little review as well it'd really make us feel good about ourselves.

#38 | The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

November 2, 2017
00:0000:00

Was the public really crying out for an Allan Quatermain movie in 2003? If so, they probably weren't banking on the incoherent mess that is The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, a notorious box office bomb that effectively ended the careers of director Stephen Norrington and star Sean Connery.

This week on Beyond The Box Set, following a request from our pals at the Blokebusters podcast, we revisited The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and tried to figure out how a decent premise ended up going so very, very wrong.

Join us as we attempt to piece together the truly incomprehensible plot of this movie, before imagining what might have been with some course-correcting sequel and reboot ideas. Along the way we also discuss terrible dialogue, Sean Connery's complete lack of effort, heavy-handed literary allusions and much more...

If you're planning to reappraise this movie at some point in the future, we strongly recommend having a drink or three to hand. Fortunately we've also got you covered this episode with some The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen drinking games to ensure your critical functions are nice and dulled by the time the seventh consecutive pointless character introduction rolls around...

---------

Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic - or questionably classic - standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. So far we've covered everything from Heathers to Hocus Pocus, with plenty in-between.

If you enjoy the show, please hit subscribe to receive a new episode for free download every Friday morning. User reviews also really help us to get Beyond The Box Set into the ears of new listeners, so we'd really appreciate any iTunes stars you could throw our way...

#37 | The Witches 2: Mousetrap

October 26, 2017
00:0000:00

In the final instalment of our Halloween mini-season, Harry and John are joined by the velvet-voiced Paul Kelly to pitch sequels for Nicolas Roeg's genuinely terrifying adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Witches

Join us as we reminisce about the many, many ways this movie traumatised us as children - including gaslighting grandmas, Anjelica Huston's facial genitalia, truly horrifying special effects work and much more.

Once we've thoroughly relived our childhood nightmares, we also set about creating some brand new ones with our characteristically offbeat sequel suggestions for this classic alleged family film. This week's ideas include an Alien crossover, a John Wick-style neo noir following former rodent Luke's ongoing vendetta against the dark forces, and a sitcom inspired by the clearly terrible customer service on display at Rowan Atkinson's Hotel Excelsior...

-----

In every episode of Beyond The Box Set, we revisit a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. It's movie podcasting with a hilariously creative twist! (We hope).

#35 | The Witches of Eastwick 2: Wizards of Wakefield

October 12, 2017
00:0000:00

In the first part of our special Halloween-themed trilogy, Harry and John revisit one of the most deliciously camp horror-comedies of the 80s - The Witches of Eastwick.

Starring Jack Nicholson as Satan and Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfieffer as a coven of impeccably styled single mothers, George "Mad Max" Miller's adaptation of the acclaimed John Updike novel is the supernatural smash hit that's been keeping drag queens in fabulous costumes and witty one-liners for the past thirty years.

Join us as discuss perm symmetry, sexual lounging, church freakouts and much more. Along the way, we also come up with some positively sinful drinking games, and of course pitch our own fantasy sequels to this iconic movie, including a gender swapped remake with a twist, and a sequel that ushers in a new generation of bad-ass witches.

Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we watch a classic standalone movie and get together to pitch ridiculous sequel, prequel and remake ideas to bring them back to the big screen. Our podcast is available on all major platforms, including iTunes, Stitcher, aCast, Podbean, Google Play and more.
